1970 Restomod Build

is the engine missing or clutch slipping?

had both happen to me with similar symptoms..

ignition related and clutch slip related...

Yes, Eureka Nevada. Stayed two nights at a nice Best Western. Harley riders had a big meetup while we were there.

Its the engine missing. We jetted up the carb and it mostly went away. Going one more jet size up and hopefully that get it conquered. Ran the old distributor and the HEI with no change.

Drove the Jeep on a big test run to the Samoa Dunes where they have Rubicon type sections set up. Jeep did great in the low speed crawling and overall four wheeling. Very happy with that segment.
The on road was a fail. More Jetting helped the sputtering and load issue but it is still there. Jeep is getting 8 MPG. Texting with Kyle and the conclusion is its doing the same thing as Robs Jeep and the cam is flat. Too big of an obstacle to overcome before the Rubicon trip. It will be fixed tested and ready for 2026.

Continued to outfit the Jeep. Have had good luck with the Land Rover Jacks over the years and bought a new/used one. These are two stage and have a tall reach. All of the decals are on magnets so I can change them around or eliminate them all.

This bag didn't work out for the side by side. It fits under the seat holding the oils and special tools for a big trip. All of the other tools fit in the stock tool box.
1970 - 256.jpg

First Aid Kit was a challenge to find a handy spot for. Had some 4" Velcro tape and it fit nicely here.
1970 - 258.jpg

Overdrive is here. Fuel injection is on the way. Still figuring out the best path for fixing or replacing the engine. Have a couple of weeks of vacation coming up so I will regroup after that.

Jeep looks great
You've done a lot with it
I have an oddfire and evenfire 231 core, but I'm on the wrong side of the country.

I’m sorry to hear you are having issues with the motor,I feel your pain. Probably a good plan to get it running right before the Rubicon, I was looking forward to meeting and hanging out this year. You have done a great job with the JEEP and should be proud of the progress you have made.

I was really looking forward to meeting everyone hanging out and comparing notes. As well as checking everyones Jeeps out. Glad you were able to put plan C together and make the adventure. I will be watching from the sidelines.

Didn't work on the Jeep much this week. Tinkered with timing and vacuum, have it running good under 40 mph. Going to leave the engine alone for the summer and putt it around the valley here. Have it in a car show toward the end of July so no changes until that is over. All of the overdrive parts are hear and the fuel injection arrived this week.

Bought in on new recovery gear. All my old gear is scattered though the other rigs. 20ft tow strap, tree strap. winch ring. 10 foot rope, a couple of hard shackles and a handful of soft shackles. Firm believer in having good recovery gear. I have been amazed on what people carry if they carry anything at all at times. Having gear organized and ready if things go south can help in a bad situation.

Hooked up the military trailer to go to the dump. The trailer and the load was more than the Jeep was capable of but we made it. Once the engine issue is solved I will level the tongue on the set up.
1970 - 262.jpg

Head to the Idaho Dunes for 10 days over the 4th of July. Getting the sand equipment cleaned up and ready. Reconfigured the Can Am after the Nevada trip.
1970 - 260.jpg

Prepping the quads. Son prefers riding these and his motorcycle over a side by side. I still ride but not like I used to.
1970 - 261.jpg

Following Geoffreyl's Garmins tracks. They look like they had a full day.

Nice work! I second what Kyle said about your garage being too clean...
I grew up in scHumboldt County, I don't remember the weather being that nice either!
You don't want to miss the Rubicon trip next year. It's a lot of fun

Thanks, The weather here is unique. We take drives on the weekend to SoHum to get some warmth. I am going on the Rubicon next year one way or another.

Not much progress this week.

Mocked up the passenger seat and it was borderline tight. Ordered seat sliders and will be doing the fenderwell mod in the future.

Fitted up the half doors.
Going to pull off the vinyl and install sheet metal on the Bestop frames. I have a another set of vinyl doors with the new top. Only go to this beach in the summer when the sand is dry and stay far away from the water.
1970 - 265.jpg

Ventured down the beach on a longer drive.
This barn used to be a quarter mile from the ocean.

Been catching up on other projects. A couple of small upgrades this week.

The mirror had failed due to age on the mirror that I had. Went back with a metal backed 5" round mirror.
1970 - 274.jpg

I had bought some cheap seatbelts in the beginning. Replaced them with a 3 inch wide belt with an old school latch.
1970 - 275.jpg

Cleaned up the Jeep for a local car show next weekend.
1970 - 276.jpg

Missed the car show. My son and I had imported two Mitsubishi Evo 6.5 Tommy Mackinen cars. Mine arrived a few months ago and his was ready to pickup at the port of Tacoma last Friday. No time to get back for the show.
No Jeep Progress. Some pix of the cars.

Jeep goes into the shop Monday to have a new muffler installed and the legs on the roll bar kicked in to allow better entry. Going for a muffler with some tone and not the loudness of the current one.

That's a good idea. I will put that on the calendar for next year. They are definitely built for that. They just recently had that event.
