67 Cj5 Build Thread By A Rookie

A few new things since the last time I posted.

1. Winch motor is done, new winch line, new UHMWPE fairleads. Valvoline daily protectant no detergent 30 wt oil. Still needs wiring and brake/clutch lines.

2. New stainless footman loops for the hood.

3. wheels are back on. I really like the look of the chrome.

4. Center console/cup holder is done.

5. iPhone holder installed.

Looks great!

New Speedhut speedometer. The GPS sensor works fine under the cowl like @Militarymetal said. The speedometer needle is really smooth - no bounce at all. Kind of off, but it takes a few minutes for the fuel level to read correctly. I’m going to reach out to Speedhut to ask about that. Speedhut has been a very responsive company.

The cluster doesn’t have oil or alt lights like the original, do I have some LEDs ordered and will install them under oil and voltage gauges.

Having completed cleaning up the wiring in my Jeepster, I now think that my “new” CJ5 wiring looks awful under the dash. Probably a summer project.

Also started on making brackets for the rear seats.IMG_7858.jpegIMG_7857.jpeg

I like your gauge setup. How's the visibility? I was actually thinking on this today, and added some sticky notes to my dash to get an idea on whether I wanted to inset gauges in the dash, or continue to bolt them in a pod under the dashboard. I'm leaning towards this arrangement:20260225_105805.jpg

One more question: what did you use to create the gauge holes? Punch out tool? Hole saw?

The lower the gauges are the harder to see. AMHIK. If you can fit them all neatly on the top line You might want to do that. At least put the oil and temp on the top row.

That's funny you mentioned that, I was looking at my dash layout yesterday too. I am leaning toward the traditional lay-out of the older model jeeps that have the four gauges arranged around the speedometer. My 74 came factory with the amp and oil press gauges already just under the speedometer. I would need only two more gauge holes above it for fuel and volt.
Was wondering the same thing about the holes. Most gauges maybe like the factory jeep gauges being 2 1/16 inch. Dont know if a hole saw is even available in that size?

Fabrication: My dash was so scarred up, I had one made by DoubleD fabrication. One of the best purchases I have made for the Jeep. My understanding is that the automotive guys use a knockout punch for gauge holes. https://www.swagoffroad.com/products/swag-knock-out-punch-automotive-gauge-sizes-2-1-16-2-5-8
My hole saw holes in sheet metal look awful. If you go that route, definitely undersized and I would do a trial run on a piece of scrap.

Visibility: Worst visibility is turn signals. I look like grandma driving down the street with my left turn signal on for no reason. I might put a pair of green LEDs above the speedo in front of the steering wheel when I run out of other things to do. Second worse is speedometer. The oil, temp, and voltage gauges are fine. The amber LEDs (oil and alt indicators) are highly visible. The most visible is the tach, which I use the least.

I've got bright LEDs for turn signals on both the '71 and the DJ-3. It definitely helps minimize grandma mode (but hasn't completely eliminated it!)

New instrument harness. I removed a lot of extra wire that I initially kept because I wasn’t sure if I would need it. It would have been better to wire things right the first time!

***I just realized my oil indicator light is wired incorrectly. It needs 12+, not a ground. I wired it like a fuel sender. I can pull hot off the oil gauge right above it, so a very easy fix, but the wiring diagram is wrong!
