Willys Wagon

The front axle is pretty much done.

I bought a set of one/ton tie rod & drag link ends from Barnes, then some steel tube from the local supplier. Measure several times; cut once. I ended up with this, after welding things together:

Now to mount the steering gear…

Are you putting the drag link into the tie rod with the double hole TRE? With a 2 hole knuckle I would assume you are running the drag link to the knuckle....so wondering what the extra piece/hole/bushing in the tie rod is for?

Yes, the drag link will connect to the hole in the tie rod end. The outer hole is too far from the ball joint pivot - the pitman arm is too short for that long a throw.

Both knuckles have two holes; I presume the Scout steering gear has either lots of travel or a long pitman or both.

Way back, when the Ford engine was installed, the front crossmember got hacked up to make room for the fan. I’ve decided to remove it and make a new one to fit around the Saginaw steering gearbox.

I’ve drilled out the four plug welds; a dozen rivets remain.

Holy Moly, Rocky!

Eight of the rivets came out OK. I cut an ‘X’ in the head with a cutoff wheel, chiseled the heads off, then punched them out.

The bottom flange (of course) was a different story. Those rivets passed through multiple layers of steel, so we’re NOT gonna drive out. I ended up using the step bit (@Boyink ) to make a big enough hole in the top flange to get a drill in from the top. Then I had to use a Dremel with a tiny cutoff disc to crosscut the inside head. Then I could chisel that off and center-punch the shank of the rivet and drill it out. Times four. Whew.

Lots of holes in the upper flange of the frame. I’ll weld them up when the new member goes in.

Progress!!

The Saginaw power steering gearbox mount is welded on!

No doubt the grille will need serious modification and a weird steering shaft will have to be built, but the first step has been taken.

Yesterday, the Big Brown Truck of Happiness brought a package from Novak; the NP435 to Dana 20 adapter kit.

Today, said kit was installed, and the transmission got bolted to the engine!

Compared to the SM465 adapter, this was child’s play. Reading the instructions as I went took as long as the actual work. I tried to find someone with a big puller for the rear bearing but failed. My Harbor Freight bearing splitter fit, so I was gonna use that. I got it set up, pulled the snap ring off the shaft, and the bearing fell off! Thank You Lord!!

The rest was easy.

Getting the clutch disc lined up so that the front bearing retainer fit in the bell housing took a couple of hours and two removals of the bell housing and clutch plate before it all lined up.
