Emergency Brake Cable Removal

I need to replace my e brake cable. No problem removing it at the transmission cross-member, especially since that's where the old cable is frayed and almost ready to fall off! The problem is that I can't figure out how to remove the cable from the emergency brake handle. I removed the clip on the firewall side and that allows the old cable to almost slide all the way off, but I am about a 1/4 inch from getting the old cable off. Any one dealt with this before, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

are we talking about the cane handle parking brake
if so . at the handle end . where the two ratchets (spring loaded clips )
lift each one up a little and the rod will move farther back . and you'll be able to turn handle
to remove cable and ball end

Adding to this old thread which I found useful tonight. The arrows point at the two ratchets. The one closer to the T is the one that needed to be lifted to get the extra length.
