The Official "What The Heck Is This?" Thread

What is this "safety latch" you speak of?

Seriously?

Later models have an extra catch like all modern passenger cars and trucks.
You reach through the hood bars to unhook the hood.
There is a square hole in the hood that accepts the hook.

Interesting. Is there a difference on the hood for Jeeps with the safety latch? I’m not sure why my grill wouldn’t have one if it has the slots for it unless it won’t work with my original hood.

Dunno if there is a difference - seems likely.
Certainly you could look at your hood for the square hole that the hook would enter.
Pic if you can't decide by looking.

I had a 68 and early 69 (with bottom wipers but flat topped glass) that don't have it. I'm guessing it came to be with the curved top glass windshield that didn't have the hook above the glass. This requires a prop rod so the wind won't knock the hood down on you. I'm guessing the safety catch happened at the same time. That would put it mid year 1969.

It seems odd Jeepstar's 68 has the catch. Have the hood and grill been changed?

Does anyone recognize what A/C system would have gone on this bracket? This is out of my 66 CJ-6A

my Sept '69 has all these mentioned. curved glass, bottom wipers, safety latch, no hook above the glass, and prop rod that hooks into the hood while up.

I thought home-made as well but in taking it off, it seemed to be too well engineered in how it was attached as well as having a part number stamped on the bottom.
Show the part number.
Other sources would be from Commandos and early full-size Jeeps with Buick 350 engine.
Add-on AC kits could be purchased from dealers and other sources during that time period.

I expect that a dealer-installed AC kit existed for the V6 CJ.
A Jeep Corp PN from this era would be 6 digits starting with 9, like 934567 or 976543.
There were also Special Equipment part numbers ("SE<something>"), shown in the Special Equipment supplement for the factory parts book.
Such a listing may be part of the parts book offered by Faxon (not cheap though).
There could also be aftermarket kits for AC that were available in the day.
Just the bracket may not be enough for positive ID... pulleys? interior housing/controls?

(covered in jpflat2a's post above).

That's what exterior hood hold-down latches are for. I removed the main hood latch on my '49 truck several years ago.

I’ve had hood latches fail on my ‘59. Hood flew up at 55mph, destroyed windshield, flew off due to slotted cowl side of hinges, and landed on the highway. A safety catch would have prevented this.

To answer an earlier question, yes, the hood is different with the latch. There is a square hole in the hood with a lip around it on Jeeps with the latch.
