Fino's 1970 Cj5 Build Thread

To keep the build thread up to date....links to some projects that were detailed in separate threads:
Oil Pan skid plate:

Warn 8274 build and mount:

With the 8274, I had to rethink how I wanted to do the recovery tow points on the front. Previously, I had classic tow hooks mounted to the winch plate on top of the frame rails, but the sunken 8274 doesn't allow for that. I decided to put the classic 3/4" shackle anchor points on the front....

There were a few options for how to do this, but I decided I wanted to keep the ability to use my flat tow bar - I don't use it much since I got the trailer, but it seemed worth trying to keep it accessible. The shackle anchor points are welded to 3/8 plate, and then bolted through the sleeved holes in rectangular tubing front frame member that is behind the facade bumper. Those are same holes my tow bar attachment brackets use, so it will require swapping out the anchor points for the brackets, which is 4 easy to access 1/2" bolts. I am not a fan of leaving the bow shackles hanging on the bumper all the time - I keep them attached to the recovery straps etc in the tool box - so this is the final look. Well, maybe....I don't like the license plate, but....

Commandos use a bracket that mounts it just behind and above the bumper.

You can buy them new but they're expensive, you could probably build something similar for very little $.

Similar to the wagon....I don't really like it there either. I used to mount it flush with the top of the bumper and bend the lower couple inches flat under the bumper....but it was centered previously, right where the fairlead is now. So when it gets moved to the end of the bumper, the lower portion bent under can contact the tire are full stuff.....just another case of me being a bit tedious with stuff, but I'll figure out something. (on the 58, I just removed it and its under the driver seat in case a LEO wants to ask).

The big flat plate above the bumper seems like an obvious place to mount it. It wouldn't effect airflow to the radiator much more than the winch already is.

I tried that....it doesn't fit as well as I was hoping.....but I might be able to bend it differently than when I first tried....its as much aesthetics as it is function

With a roller fairlead, a front license plate is easy to display. I use one on my CJ & on my Wrangler.

And, hey, they have one for a hawse fairlead!!!
yea - ive been avoiding going that route, but starting to consider it more seriously......maybe I could make my own version....It looks to me like they only flip up to about 90 degrees?....I'd like it better if it flipped up 180 - put the plate vertical upwards so its totally out of the way of the cable or straps even when pulling at weird angles.
