Norcal69's Common Sense Build.

Start in the BV/St Elmo area (there is good camping up past Mt Princeton HS and that would save a lot of commuting time).
Mon - Hancock to Alpine Tunnel, return via Williams
Tues - Grizzly and Iron Chest
Wed - Chinaman Gulch (or Wheeler Lake)
Relocate further north to Leadville area?
Thurs - Holy Cross
Fri - Iron Mike

That still leaves Blanca - come out a few days early and make it happen? Or alternate plan might be:

Mon - up Blanca (camp a lake como)
Tue - down Blanca (move up towards BV)
Wed - Grizzly/Iron Chest
Thurs - Holy Cross (or Chinaman)
Fri - Iron Mike

penciling it in - that way I can focus on getting ready for next week

With the Rubicon trip a little more than 3 months away, it is time to start getting the jeep ready.
For the first time in more than 10 yrs of owning this jeep, I left it outside all winter.
I parked the Jeep in my loading dock last October after hunting, mud and all......
Will it start?

Fuel injection is the best thing Ive done to this jeep!

Looks like the soft top will need to be washed and treated with mold/mildew remover before it gets put away for the summer.
Funny how being lazy always bites you in one way or another.

With Uncle Mac not attending the Rubicon trip with his YJ/CJ7 hybrid this year, space in my jeep is going to be scarce this year.
I briefly considered leaving my CJ5 home and running Uncle Mac's jeep for the added space, but I really don't want to have to fix it if it breaks.
Uncle Mac is likley retiring from Rubicon adventures, I feel its best to do the same with his jeep while it is in good shape.

I have a small tote box that contains camp cook wear, butane fuel canisters, bug spray, taco Tuesday serving supplies and a bunch of other stuff.
The box is not heavy by any means but does take up allot of precious space in the back of the jeep.
I briefly considered going back to the roof basket setup that I ran on my first Rubicon trip..... but that was uncomfortably top heavy/tippy.
Some brainstorming and google image viewing led me to a spare tire rack mounted storage solution.

I started off with the same chunk of scrap mill equipment steel that I made Rich's skid plate out of.
Rough cut out a 7" diameter circle.

From there I knocked a 4" diameter hole in the rough center with a hole saw and chucked it up in the lathe.

I started off with an angle grinder to smooth out the disc before introducing lathe tooling.
After a few minutes the disc was decently round.

Using a wheel spacer as a guide and a center punch I marked out the bolt pattern.

Over to the iron worker to punch the 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern.

I cut a 1" long ring out of an old 4" diameter GM 1 ton drive shaft.
This was in the scrap metal bin when I saved it!

The 4" diameter slug from the hole saw fit perfectly into the drive shaft ring.

Both pieces welded together.

At this point I got called away for a bit and my phone was too low to keep on my person.
After work I was able to button up the rest of this part for the project.
I made a mini hitch receiver out of a scrap of 1-3/4" hand railing from the mill boneyard.
1-1/2" box tube fits nice and snug into this tube and will be secured with a 3/8" tractor pin.

Finally back to working on this small pre Rubicon project.
Other than the bolt hole mounting ring slightly warping during welding, everything fits well.

The spare wheel/tire sandwiches the carrier receiver and holds it in place.
I am temporarily loosing my third brake light, but my led taillights are plenty bright enough.

I did not take pictures of the rack fabrication process, but you can be assured that it is made entirely out of used material.
The main post is made out of some old mill hand rail and the angle iron is from an old bed frame.

The rack is built around the commonly available 56 quart Plano Sportsman's Trunk.
This is their "small" size with a base of 20"x13".
My plan is to replace the current 48 qt tote that previously rode inside the jeep and carried my kitchen, camp site accessories, taco Tuesday prep and serving supplies.
Relocating these items from inside the jeep to outside frees up a ton of space in the bed of the jeep for other heavier items.

Love the tailpipe through the crossmember/bumper.
