With Uncle Mac not attending the Rubicon trip with his YJ/CJ7 hybrid this year, space in my jeep is going to be scarce this year.
I briefly considered leaving my CJ5 home and running Uncle Mac's jeep for the added space, but I really don't want to have to fix it if it breaks.
Uncle Mac is likley retiring from Rubicon adventures, I feel its best to do the same with his jeep while it is in good shape.
I have a small tote box that contains camp cook wear, butane fuel canisters, bug spray, taco Tuesday serving supplies and a bunch of other stuff.
The box is not heavy by any means but does take up allot of precious space in the back of the jeep.
I briefly considered going back to the roof basket setup that I ran on my first Rubicon trip..... but that was uncomfortably top heavy/tippy.
Some brainstorming and google image viewing led me to a spare tire rack mounted storage solution.
I started off with the same chunk of scrap mill equipment steel that I made Rich's skid plate out of.
Rough cut out a 7" diameter circle.
From there I knocked a 4" diameter hole in the rough center with a hole saw and chucked it up in the lathe.
I started off with an angle grinder to smooth out the disc before introducing lathe tooling.
After a few minutes the disc was decently round.
Using a wheel spacer as a guide and a center punch I marked out the bolt pattern.
Over to the iron worker to punch the 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern.
I cut a 1" long ring out of an old 4" diameter GM 1 ton drive shaft.
This was in the scrap metal bin when I saved it!
The 4" diameter slug from the hole saw fit perfectly into the drive shaft ring.
Both pieces welded together.
At this point I got called away for a bit and my phone was too low to keep on my person.
After work I was able to button up the rest of this part for the project.
I made a mini hitch receiver out of a scrap of 1-3/4" hand railing from the mill boneyard.
1-1/2" box tube fits nice and snug into this tube and will be secured with a 3/8" tractor pin.
