I gave up on repairing the stock one and bought an Autometer gauge and matched a new sending unit to it. Ran a new ground wire and PRESTO! a working gas gauge.

What a relief not to have to use a gas dip stick to check the level.--Rob

Autometer gauges show up frequently on ebay. They're either used or new. I bought all my AutoMeter Pro Comp gauges from different sellers and saved a ton over buying from dealers.

Yes I have the underseat tank and Yes the gauge is 12v.

The info I got thru a couple of threads here said that the sending unit that I needed for my 1960 was one rated at 10 to 78 ohms I believe. All I did was ask for a gauge that was rated the same and everything worked fine. I think that all you need to know is what ohms resistance that the sending unit you buy is rated at from empty to full. Simply match the gauge up the same and you're all set.

    Gas gauge-----$29
    Sending unit---$26

    Half hour of install time---free

Knowing how much gas I have in the tank----Priceless ;)
