Hello, I am doing a lot of wiring on my 60 CJ5. My original Spartan turn signal was a mess so I started (maybe 10 years ago) to put in a new after market from Kaiser Willys. Anyway, got things pretty much working except the pilot light in the switch. The instructions say to sand off some paint on the steering column to secure the ground but if the housing is plastic like these new ones…how is that supposed to ground the plastic housing to the steering column via the hose clamp? I tested it by placing a wire from the metal handle to the column and it works. What am I missing from the instructions or is it implied that you need to run a little wire from inside the plastic housing to the column? Does this make sense?Thank you for the help! Peter

Could you run a wire from the turn signal base to the dash and ground it that way?

Won't the clamp provide a ground direct to the column? Perhaps you are reading into the instructions the addition of a wire. Metal to metal contact between the clamp and the column would be enough, as long as there is no paint between to block contact.

Even with the Spartan, I ran an extra wire down to the dash for a ground. The pilot light works great.

thanks for the replies! I’m going to make a little jumper and ground the pilot bulb to the hose clamp. As to why the clamp isn’t grounding…on the old Spartans and even the new chrome one you can buy, the outer case is metal. On the common one sold now that outer housing of the turn signal is plastic thus no metal comes in contact with the clamp.

You inspired me to find my old Spartan and since I never throw anything away…I did. I think I want to do a refurbishment on it and put it back in. I think they look better! Looking for a video on how to do that project!
