    Hey everyone,

Well, Santa brought me some cash and Home Depot gift cards, so I went and got myself an abrasive cut off tool and some metal so I can start on my spare tire rack. Got most the cutting done, gotta take it into the shop tomorrow and do some milling and drilling. I'll keep a photo log and put a section on my site for it. I'm hoping I'll have the spare and Hi Lift on the back of the Jeep by the weekend. Here's the pic of the major parts....

It's gonna be a swing down carrier. I'm on a budget, and couldn't spring for bearings, hinges, etc. The bumper portion will also (eventually) support some D rings, a couple of Jerry cans and a "expedition" rack. (Beer cooler rack, but don't tell the wife...) But for right now, I'll settle on getting the spare and the jack outta the way.

    Yappy Hew Near!

Looks like a good start Thad. I'm interested in the hinging and latching method for this carrier. The '74 that I'm currently working on has a dealer-installed swing down carrier, but it seems like it would rattle. I'd like to see what you come up with.

Also - give us a picture of that chop saw!!!!!!!!!

OK, I got the main parts welded up tonite, and the hinge part works well. I left a bit of the up post sticking down, so it will hit the bottom of the bumper and only go straight out and no further.
Gotta take it into the shop tomorrow so I can use the mill to drill the mounting holes, and a big ol' hole for the clevis' (or is that clevii?)

    Yes, I took pictures :D

No, I didn't send 'em to my server yet :(

I'll get those and a pic of the cutoff saw posted on Friday most likely.

    Happy New Year!

Thanks for the update Bill. Looking forward to the pictures (particularly the latch mechanism - HINT)

Don't mean to step on the thread but, what does anyone think of using an old hood hinge from a cj for a swing down unit? I am designing a a tire carrier, too. Wondering if the hood hinge would be strong enough to support tire, jack, and maybe a gas can on the down swing. Weight will be supported by the rack itself the rest of the time. Ofcourse, the jack and can will be taken off before the rack is swung down to take off tire.
I built one before and don't like it so I want to do it right or atleast better this time.

I dunno, that's not a lot of metal in the hinge. I just finished mine using 1/4" tubing and angle for the hinge, and while the heftiness is more than adequate, I don't think I'd want to go down in strength. Sure would hate to have the thing get all bent up on the trail. See http://members.cox.net/azoldbill/BUMPER for a write up on mine...
