Yep, Bought A '68 Cj5(project)

Not a whole lot done today~ but finally got some tape to tape off for painting. Should be able to install the disc brakes tomorrow and re-phase the drive shaft. However I don't have the brake hoses yet, but I guess I can work on installing the Wilwood master cylinder and the 2 psi wilwood "things". hmm, I think I'll paint the differential covers flat black, just don't like the red~ I would like some new aluminum diff covers, but that can be done later on.

Gary asked me how much longer until completion~ I told him 1 1/2 years




My brother sent me this pic of his '62 a little bit ago today, you guys know it well! I don't get to see him due to the virus thing~sad I must admit, I (we) did a kick *** job on that jeep!

 

Had a pretty good day~ I'm noticing things are starting to disappear in my garage cause the parts are going into my jeep!

I received the steel power steering bracket so I can start painting those parts! the part was a bit pricey at 190.oo total, but at least I don't have to waste time looking anymore~ sometimes just have to press the "buy it now" button!
oh, looking at the picture, guess I ought to install the intake, but I ran out of sealant


I don't have one bolt the correct length for the adjustment






I got all the brakes stuff on, just have to work on brake lines and hydraulics~ so maybe tomorrow I can play with that, but I don't have the rubber lines yet, I"m sure I can find something to do




OK, got to go play with the dogs, they never get tired of fetchin the ball!

 

I spent most the day cleaning the shop~ I do that from time to time~ makes me more efficient Tomorrow, who knows

 

This Jeep is going to be incredible!!!

Question about this pic. Do you have the cover that goes over the flywheel on the bottom of the bell housing? I don't have one and was thinking of making an aluminum one. Would love to see a pic of it if you have it. I'm hoping it's just a flat plate with some holes.

 

Hi James and thank you for that super compliment yes, I do have the plate, just wasn't putting it on until I put the starter on. I'll get a picture of it for you, and it's mostly flat. I can trace it out on some paper and send that to you? You can pm me your address and I'll get that out to you

Oh that pic is a great help thank you. I might take you up on the offer to trace it, I was thinking of just shoving a piece of cereal box type thin cardboard up there and tracing around the bell as a template. I need to confirm I have that same bell housing, I have a SM420 in mine but I didn't do the swap so not sure if they changed the bell or not. Thanks again.

 

It looks like a Dauntless one. I replaced mine with a new one, with a larger diameter tube from TA Performance. It allows more volume (I drilled out my oil galleys) but it is also much more rigid than the skinny stock one.

 

I posted a reply and I see you already got the pickup screen figured out.

Before you set your pinion angle, be sure to load the appropriate weight of the finished Jeep on the springs, via weights, sandbags, 5 gallon buckets of water, etc. As your springs compress, the pinion angle will change, and it's best to get it set up as your Jeep drives, at it's average weight when completed.

 

OMG, it's such a beautiful day here in Cypress, Texas! All I've been doing is cleaning shop!

Here's my question for today, Can I put a regular Delco alternator in place of the smaller original? I have a 3 wire in my 59 truck with a 350 engine, I'm tempted to take it out to see if it would fit

 

Delco alt. is a bolt on replacement for the Motorola.

Hi guys, not much going on, kind of caught up on stuff, waiting for pesky parts.

This is the gas tank which was in the back, wasn't pretty where it came through the floor, but something to think about; it is a large tank and amazingly clean inside.
what say you all?

Nice to have that much volume but I'm not a fan of the filler location. Are you going to run a back seat?

 

I would go with a rear tank from a 71 if the bracing was already removed for that big tank, but the filler hoses for the 71 is getting to be unobtainium I hear. The 71 rear tank may be the same as the intermediate (72-75) i can't remember.

If you want extra capacity you can put your under seat tank back in as was original for that year, along with a selector valve.

 

Not thrilled with the filler location either. Could you make a side filler or rear filler for it? How far down does the tank hang? rock collector?

I would be on the hunt for everything required to do a factory rear tank install
filler neck / hoses / tank / skid plate

 

Is that a saddlebag tank from a big truck? Never seen one of those in a Jeep before.

I second Twin2. I’m all for different and unique, but that filler location is just hazardous, and dare I say, weird.

 

Yeah, that's what I thought you guys would say and thanks for the opinions it's just that I have it and will just wind up being trash. I'll be repairing the gapping hole and go with the stock tank.

Itlksez, it looks like one of those big truck tanks, it is BIG.

 

Some of the CJ guys would come by and buy "side fill" Jeepster Commando/Commando tanks. '70-'73. However, I never saw how they did it. AERO Tank out of Corona, CA used to make good custom tanks for jeeps.
