I have two of these speedometers, one has a piece attached to the back with wiring going through it to the fuel and temp gauges. Does anyone know what exactly this piece does?

Speedos in question are the two on the left.

Now on the back you can see the piece in question on the right. It connects to the bridge bar between the gas gauge and temp gauge. speedos1.jpg

Both of those should have the external voltage regulator. Note the one on the left is missing the third terminal on the fuel gauge which would indicate internal regulator.

Yup instrument voltage regulator used on the King Seely speedos. When willys switched to Stewart Warner speedos in mid '57 the regulator was incorporated into the gas gauge.

New ones are found on ebay, same thing as that era Fords used. Can be replaced with a more modern 7805 regulator which has been discussed here in the past.
