Windshield install in replacement frame

Look at the THICKNESS of the grooves in the rubber. Glass is thick, sheetmetal is thin.

 

My old locking type seal that I just removed has the shallow side as the glass side and the deeper side with frame. (and yes...the shallow side is also wider to allow for the glass fitment)

The seal was installed by starting in the bottom center of the frame.

 

I started installing the seal yesterday and it appears that I have about a foot of extra seal. Is this thing a fit to cut? It's a replacement seal from Crown/Omix-Ada.

 

Yes it's cut to length, But cut it a 1/2" or so long, this will help it keep a good tight seal where the joint is. And it will help it stay together longer when it shrinks from aging. The glass place I talked to also said to put urethane glass sealer in the joint, but I didn't. That stuff is $25.00 a tube, and your only gonna use a shot of it.

He told me that silicone(RTV) would break down and allow the seal to pull apart, and urethane wouldn't break down.

 

yea itll break down in sunlight but if its smusshed together tightly the rtv only fills the little gap in the rubber and should be fine lookin to help save money is all.......its not my first clambake you know......

 

Finally got it in guys. I have to say that I don't want to do that again anytime soon. It took 3 of us, about 2 hours to fight that glass into the frame, then to put the locking strip in. Dang what a job.

Thanks for the link, I've seen it before. This installation is quite different from that which is required to install a factory glass/seal in a CJ from 70-75. The seal on this windshields is a 2 piece seal, ie...a seal and a lock strip, and the seal is not a complete gasket per say. IT has a split in it, therefore requiring that you install it in the windshield frame, then install glass, then install lock strip.
