so it was bound to happen... i dont have the WS bolted to my jeep currently and i have been moving it from one side of the garage to the other for a couple weeks. Well you guess it, it slipped and fell and now its cracked right down the middle.... its not in my direct line of vision but i dont want to give the cops an excuse to give me a violation...

what have your experiences been like for getting new glass for these? do auto glass places actually stock these or do i have to get it custom cut? what have you guys paid?

i called one local auto-glass chain today and the guy didnt know a darn thing... he said he was just there to take apointments for next week.

just took the w/shield frame and glass to the glass shop
of course, that's after I broke the first one they made for me trying to install it myself.........
    they didn't laugh too hard

Last one I bought for a jeep I had cut. Cost me $35, well actually $70 after I broke the first one putting it in. But that was back in the early 80s. I would go to a local shop, or give them a call about cutting a windshield. I had a piece cut for my buggy and the guy did it while I waited. I don't remember what he charged me, but it wasn't much.

ok so its not too bad... sounds like somewhere (or under) about 100$ for most of you guys.

looks like the consensus is DO NOT install myself hahahaha. I've gotta repaint the WS first (my color matching skills arent as stellar as i thought) and then i'll just bring the whole thing over and leave it there. :)

    thanks guys

I paid around $90 bux for two pieces of tinted flat windshield glass, I did the install. I found out later that the non-tinted glas is much, much cheaper.

The biggest thing is to make sure that you are getting laminated windshield glass, and not tempered side-window glass. There should be an etched mark in the corner of the window so that the inspection station will know it is the correct glass.

FWIW my Jeep had hardware-store plate glass in it when I bought it.

Don't use Lexan for a windshield. It's very strong, but it scatches like CRAZY! It's also not street-legal in the US.

Yep on the lexan. As long as you have a seemingly endless supply like I had back then it is ok to use if you aren't needing it street legal. You will pretty much have to replace it every few rides though because of how easily it scratches. I mean, get a little dust on it and try to whipe it off and you will find out you can't see out of it anymore. As far as the glass I have gotten, it is usually next day or same day and usually runs around $100 or a little less. Most I have ever paid was $110 installed, but it has been a while so they may have gone up a little bit. I kinda have somebody on the inside of a certain county maintanence now though that works a glass cutter for school bus windshields, so I don't really pay for the glass anymore.

    Don't tell anybody though.:)

speaking of street legal... this may be a stupid question but is it legal to drive without one? or with the WS folded down? Being North of the border from you guys, i could only really do it in summer but still would be good to know...

Nobody had ever said anything to me about doing it, so I don't really know about any laws against it. Of course the last one I drove with the windshield down on was nowhere near street legal, but in the area we were in the cops don't bother the offroaders because of all the business it brings into the area that would otherwise be a ghost town.:)

it just seems like a lot of people just dont do it... to me its one of the coolest things about having a jeep.

you should see the looks on people's face when i tell them that the windhshield on their YJ or TJ folds down. utter disbelief hahahahaha

Never had a YJ, but I know it is a pita to fold the windshield down on my TJ. I'll be changing all that before long though, because there is nothing like having the windshield down, especially on the trails.

Depends on the province, some places its legal to fold it down, others it isn't. Not sure about Quebec, you can try it & see if QPP or MUC guys have a sense of humour:twisted:

Where it is legal you still have to have the windshield as it's factory equipment.

i better bolt it back on then eh Bob? R)

Actually i think if the missing windshield doesnt get their attention, the 35 inch mudders sticking out the sides might. :driving:
nothing to report yet, but i've only had her on the road for a couple weeks now... if that.

I don't understand why it would be a problem. They ride motorcycles without windshields, don't they? I would wear goggles, though. A bug in the eye wouldn't be too pleasant I would think.

There's usually some kind of law about "eye protection", and I believe windshields fall under that category. Don't know about folding them down though, it's still "there" after all. Same question about the venting windshields...will I be able to drive with mine open? You can bet I'll give it a try! AND with it folded down too!

It is legal in Va, but it is one of those things you do when you want a ticket for something else from what I have been told. Sarina's Dad told me basicly the cop will pull you over for no windshield then get mad he can't write you a ticket for that so he will find something else to nail you for.

When my brother got his first JEEP in 1982, he had to get a safety inspectio. Now this was in Texas, he did not have to have a windsheld but had to have windshield wipers.
So he took one and zip tied one to the steering .
