OK. I had to get a new piece of glass for my windshield frame. I had a guy custom cut a piece for the frame. He said the frame is bent, which i iknow it is (from rolling) but he can make a glass from the frame. He took the frame the other day and made a piece of glass for it. Well I put it up to the frame and it really does not seem to line up. I called him to see if he would just install it because i didnt want to mess with it now. Well he pretty much washed his hands of it. He said he didnt want to install the glass because of the frame condition (bends) and because it would probably bust on him and he would be out money. He said he cut it for this frame and it will only work with this frame becuase it is bent on the side frames a touch, not completely rectangular. So I am kind of bummed now. I went out and tried to get it in the frame and it just is too tight. The gasket is in and it really seems like it will not fit. The guy said he used a gasket to test it, but it was not the same kind of gasket as i have, so i think he cut it wrong. So I really do not want to be bothered anymore from this guy. the glass was cheaper than the other palces and the guy seemed nice enough. So now I hav a dilemma. I have to get the glaass in my friday.

    So...

    1. try to grind glass down a bit to fit in "my" gasket. I only have an angle grinder and i think if i go slow and not heat the glass up i can shave it down.

    2. Go to Hope Dpot and get a piece of Plexiglass and cut it to fit. This is kind of what i am thinking bout doing if somebody says i shouldnt use an angle grinder on the glass.

    3. get a new frame, this will be best option but i cant really wait for it to get here. A buddy of mine has a brand new 72-6 frame that was shipped to him wrong and the company didnt want it back, so i can get it from him but i do not think the glass is the same and i would rather keep my top mounted wipers.

    What would you guys suggest???

Dan: An angle grinder will work fine for grinding glass. Just don't use anything coarser than 100 grit. It will be slow going and remember to use a face mask of some kind and eye protection. Also try non abrasive hand soap to mount it.

Why didn't you just get a new gasket, take it to the glass shop and have them mount it?

The gasket i had it really good shape. fortunately. I thought i could do it myself because i have installed glass in the frame before and had no problems, this is just so tight to it, i think it was cut wrong.

Definately will use face and mask for this, the glass is not to good in the eyes or lungs.

    Dan,
A belt sander with a grease stick is the way to go,used to finish the edges all the time this way. They use water belt sanders in glass shops. The problem you will have is that the glass heats up and will glow red almost instanly and that is when it can chip or crack that is what the grease helps avoid, also it should be laminated safety glass which is 2 pieces of 1/8" +- with thin "plastic between,so you will be grinding 2 seperate pieces thus you have to watch both as not to get hot spots. good luck ;)

I started to grind the glass yesterday boy was that a pain. It took a long time being so careful. Well quarter way through i stopped and had a thoguht i then got the phone and called up a friend of mine. I remembered that he installed glass, but i thoguht house glass. So i called him and asked him if he can work with auto glass and he said that was his specialty. So i was quite bummed that i didnt remember in the beginning. But tonight i am going to take the glass, frame and gasket over to him tonight so he can re-cut and install the glass in the frame. I would have rather supported him and his family in the first place with this project
