Windshield Frame Repair

What a bone head. This frame was rust free when I stored it in a wet corner of my basement 18 yrs ago

Thoughts ? Repair or replace ? Rest of it is good

My thought was that the pre-'68 w/s frames are fairly easy to come by. Probably be ahead to just replace it. Or up grade to the bottom mount wiper style if your not staying original. mike

 

with the junk frames now a days . I would buy one (new) just for the corner
and fix the one you have

 

Since the OP is proving himself adept at cancer repair, I say cut out the rot and replace with new steel, time permitting of course. It’s only the corner, no?

 

Early narrow glass frame.........easy to come by. but I would upgrade to the later 69-75 curved top glass frame.......much better improved visibility.......unless you just don't have anything else better to do as I've tried fixing older frames and the sheet metal is layered in there so the only welding that can be had is on the outside.

Before you consider repairs, look very closely at the bottom box section. Yours may have much more rust than meets the eye. Also, the tube frame looks pretty far gone on that lower corner where the hinge slides in. That tube is the whole strength of the frame when the wind is pushing on it going down the road. A splice in that tube would need gusseting at the minimum.
You might be better off writing this one off, but strip all the hardware if you do.

Yes, but yours has the flat topped glass.......on the later / different frame the glass extends up into that area where the wiper motors are , the wiper motor goes down to the area above the hood.......adds about 2.5-3" of extra glass viewing area.

 

I just unpacked a new reproduction top wiper windshield from Walck's!!! It has a Taiwan sticker on it.
When I slid the hinge in--huge problem! The rear edge of the hinge base (that is fastened with the three bolts)
touched the bottom of the frame---But the forward edge of the hinge base was 3/8" away from touching the frame!!! In short, the entire bottom of the frame was welded at the wrong angle-WAY wrong angle!!! Plus the defrost vents were
smashed in the 80% of the width of the frame. I have call Carl and made him aware of this. I will be sending this back! It is just too bad to attempt to fix it and besides that, why should one have to on a new frame. Quality control sucks--in both countries it appears.

Does anyone offer a quality replacement made here in America? Or, after Johns1967CJ5 is taken care of, I would be interested to know where I might find one also. I am surprised to read above that they are easy to come by. But that is good news.

No ............but the original frames like shown above with top wiper motors are out there in decent condition.........it's the later frames from 69-75 that are hard to find in a decent condition.......both can have rust issues especially around the lower lip where the rubber glass seal rides due to the rubber seal becoming hard and allowing water to enter that area which also includes the defroster internal vent area inside the frame..........Go West to find decent frames.......including the Southwest.........Yes the'll cost about $140 to ship.......but faced with that offshore junk there hardly is any other choice. Try jwjeep.com/ in Antelope , Cal they used to have several.......but that wrecking yard is not full of parts as it once was...........Craigs List in California in the counties East of Sacramento in the Sierras is also a good choice.

I bought a reproduction windshield frame, it was pretty ugly right out of the box. I wound up welding it all the way around, filling in a lot of unneeded holes, moving the foot loop to center, making a mirror mount, and custom marine windshield wiper mounts, it was a lot of fun work and it looks like it was stock.
The windshield you have is a good one, with the electric wipers and all, I would look for another one just like it and make one out of the two, plus you will have all the extra parts.

 

It may not be worth it to fix this windshield ... however, I'd think you could find a smashed windshield that could serve as a donor if you wanted to repair it. So many windshields are smashed in roll-overs - all you need is that one corner intact.

 

Except for the corner and a spot on top i dont see much rust. I definitely don't want after market

 

Then sandblast the carp out of it and see what's left. But how will you ever get the interior rustfree?

Me, I'd be looking for a NOS ventilating w/s. (Oh, wait…. I already have one hanging in my shed.)

 

I would probably build a basin out of wood and plastic then soak it in rust remover or toilet bowl cleaner, then por-15. Sandblaster is coming sat so we'll see.
