In rebuilding my xfer case for my 55 cj5, I installed a new speedo cable to the original Willys speedometer. With that and putting power back to the speedo...to my surprise it works. The gas gauge, temp, headlight lights, maybe the oil light if the sending unit was in  , but the speed gauge needs to be calibrated.

Anyone know who could accomplish this properly?

The dana 18 has gears that pair with the gear ratio of your axles to give an "accurate" speed. You can either pull of your transfer case again and replace the existing speedo gears, or change your axle gearing ;)

So, close enough isn't legal? :?

Funny this is brought up today. I was wondering how far mine is off with the 33's on there now...

And does everyone's bounce around between 53-59 MPH?

\Pullt he cable housing off the back of the speedo, and retrieve the cable shaft from the housing. It should come right out with a bit of twisting and pulling. Grease that humemr up and slide it back down into the case, takign care to make sure it is seated in the transfercase before you try to connect it back up to the speedo. It will run slicker than owl snot!

<edit> Doh! I used lubriplate on mine. </edit>

That should run terribly in cold weather.
Speedometer lube cost about $1.50 and I still have most of the tube I bought 10 years ago or so.

I stand suitably awed sir.. R)

What's so bad about lubriplate? It's white lithium, no?

Besides, my Jeep is a hangar queen in the winter months. :)

Nothing, but it thickens in the cold, we use Lubriplate at work good stuff but if it is used in the winter I make sure its not on sensitive things like a speedo cable.

......or after awhile you'll just get used to it. 60, oh yeah, that's 30 mph. ;)

    Lauderdale Speedometers....right on!

Thank you, thats what I needed right there. In replacing my cable (both the parking brake and speedo) I pulled the cable out of the sheathing and used WD-40 to lube the sheath up, and reinserted the cable. A tip a good friend advised.

I used the original speedo gear when I rebuilt...I wanted to keep as many original parts on as possible...changing axle ratios are not an option cause I love it the way its setup now (original...whatever it is...I aint goin into the axles unless something blows!)

I figured it was just from age and needed a little tweeking.

    WD-40? Uh-oh. I'm afraid you'd been better off with the Lubriplate. .02

WD-40 is not a lubricating agent, it is Water Displacement fomula 40. It should never be used as a lubrication only as a moisture removal tool such as cleaning a wet distributor or used on a part that water was used to clean. Wet electrical circuits or such. Speedo lube is very cheap and if used will last for probably 10 years or more.

sorry, i did not mean for you to take me seriously. Most of us just calibrate our brains to adjust for a bouncing or "off" speedo.
