Once I do my v8 swap in the spring, I may go with an electric cooling fan. Anyone done this? Did you mount it in front of or behind the radiator? What do you use to control it? What year/model car is a good donor vechicle for an electric fan? What amp rating is your alternator?

I run an electric fan between the radiator and grill for my 283. I have it on a three way switch; automatic (it's a got a temp sending unit in the radiator), off, and on. Mine was a universal electric from the local A/P store, Hayden I think. Can't remember the diameter, can check when I get home. Standard GM alternator, 60 amp I think.

BTW - I'm still running the standard engine fan too.

I'm running one, I mounted mine behind as a puller, it depends on the amount of room you have, I runa Hayden I think.
Get the biggest one that will fit.
As for the controler, I just use a switch and relay. They sell auto kits witha temp sender that cuts on and off.

I'm running a low profile 2400 CFM pusher between the grill and radiator. If anything it works too well.

Didn't I read here that the Taurus/Sable motors draw a lot more amps than the aftermarket ones do?

In my opinion it's not worth running the taurus sable stuff. A good perma-cool is under $100 brand new with the mounting hardware. Not sure why everyone is so hot on junkyard electrical parts.

Chuck, could you point me to where I could get a 2400 CFM pusher fan for under $100? Summit lists them closer to $200.

I am running a pusher and a puller fan on my radiator. Works really nice when you have them going in the correct direction, if not it overheats very quick. i did away with the engine fan because of space issues and for the fact i can turn the fans off with a switch on the dash. I got mine for like $65 att the local discount auto parts store. I have had them for 4 years and they work good. Remember to use a relay if you use a switch, i didnt and burned out 2 switches after a while, and boy do they burn up ;)
Also make a bracket to hold the fan, do not use the zip ties because it WILL make the radiator leak after a while, it took 4 years for mine to do it, and i knew it was going to happen then it finally did last spring.

I got a Flexalite 1800 CFM for $25 from a friend who pulled it off of his SBC. Its a pusher and is installed on the front of the radiator. I've got it toggled switched, no relay, on the dash. Works great for the V6.

I have a Chevy 383 ci V8 in my frame rails and Dan is right about the mount. I had a `68 Impala 3 core radiator in the Jeep when I got it, it would only run at 205* or higher. I went with a puller, "Spal" fan that was one of the more expensive high rated fans, with the ziptie mounting, well it vibrated loose, punching 4 holes in the core at 13,000ft. AAARGGG!!! Well, I got back to flat land, 5280 ft and went looking for a better way. I work on a couple NASCAR Stockcars and we use aluminum radiators, I went and found that with the airbox cut off the stock `62 grille, a 19" x 22" x 2" radiator fit up there nice. I run a 170* stat and it never over heats now, even without a shroud around a 17" steel fan. The radiator came from http://www.speedwaymotors.com Their Tru-cool radiator is only priced at $139.95 and you don't have to worry about using amps. click on the pix for the link.

Oh yea, don't use a flex fan with a V8 Jeep and a small radiator, been there fried that. A flex fan will flatten out at higher rpms, so if gassing it in 3rd gear 4low up a hill you are NOT cooling the Jeep. I've fought this cooling issue for 3 years before getting the radiator, so I've been around the block with this one.
here's a link to my posts using keyword radiator.

Because its cheap and it works.
I have a pile of fans in my shop that were claimed to work, none did.
After my LT-1 conversion I could not get the motor below 225*. Space was tight and any of the low profile units did not pull the cfm to cool the motor.
I ended up going with the 3 wire Taurus fan and a late model CJ grill. Had to cut the grill up a bit so that the radiator was right up to the slats and mounted the fan directly behind. The great thing is the fact that the Taurus fan is a drop in fit! I wired it per the pirate thread and it pulls air like mad. Now the motor runs constant at 185*-195*, no matter what the altitude or load.
