Not that you can hear anything over the whine of most 18 transfer cases. ;)

Do some investigating as you go. Carefully examine the old rings as you go. Test fit, measure gaps etc. Don't lose sight of the fact you're looking for a cause of premature failure too. I'd advise recording what you find also.

I would do a tune up first, along with making sure the carb is clean. And check out the air-cleaner to make sure it isn't clogged somehow.
One of the things I found with mine just before I installed the pertronix in it was that the points wouldn't hold the gap setting. New points. It would run great the day I set 'em, and then run like a lazy dog on the front porch the next. I got tired of resetting the points and got the pertronix for my distributor. Has run like a Raped Ape since I did that. Since 2007.
And I have no trouble getting up to 55mph with my rig.

Find anything out yet? My f had was really wimpy, but once I did a proper lash adjustment and got the peryronix, my f head goes crazy fast.

Well, I gave in and put new rings in the little 134. When I was tearing it down, I checked the ring gap with the old rings, .016/ .018, which is within specs. I think fsm says .007-.029. Valves looked good. I pulled the intake valves to check the seat area and all looked good. rotated the engine and looked at the exhaust valves, all looked good with a tiny, shiny line all the way around all of them. I measured lift on the exhaust also and seemed within specs. Measured bore size also. Original bore was 3.125, and mine was bored .030, so 3.155. I used a snap T gauge and a digital caliper and got from 3.153- 3.157. I did measure both inline with crank and cross-crank. Not much out of round. The one thing I found that bothered me was excessive dirt in the oil pan. there was actually chunks of dirt in there. No clue how it got there. I use the original oil bath air filter and change the oil in it every time I change engine oil. Is there something else I should be doing?
I used the Sealed Power ring set from Rockauto and put in new rod bearings also while the opportunity was there.
Put it all together, adjusted valves( they were off a little) and drove it probably 50-60 miles today. I changed the oil again when I got home. Little feller did much better. It still don't compare to the v6 in the cj6 or the 360 in the cj5, but it is more drivable now. Still not sure what made the difference.

Oil bath air filters actually work quite well. If the oil in the air filter was not excessively dirty when you changed it I can't see that any significant amount of dirt could have gotten into the engine. I would think that the cylinder walls would have been scored enough to easily show it also. Have you looked closely at the old rings to see if they show any wear? Or, I wonder if they just prematurely lost their tension?
