My story is similar to Vanguard. After a couple rebuild kits and a couple carbs, my YFs ran poorly. I bought a Solex and while it ran ok, after some mild adjustments, it ran great.

I will say, I have since gotten another FHead with the YF and it ran great.

For a restore, I’d hunt for a decent YF. For a driver, I’d run whatever works.

Ok ,so I took another needle that has a spring (retainer) on it and put it in the YF and seems to be running with no flooding issues, thanks for all the great info. The video is only 16 sec long but I let it run for 20 minutes with revving engine periodically and never overflowed once. Exhaust is a little loud as I don't have a muffler on it right now. The original was rusted completely through.

Not sure but I think I may have to check Valve Lash.

Thanks, I am going to go to Harbor Freight and grab a set of Feeler Gauges. I haven't had a set in 15 years. lol I watched a really good video on Valve Lash adjustment for this motor. I have refrained from painting the motor until I am certain I have most/all of the bugs worked. No sense having a pretty boat anchor. lol

It's a bit tough unless u pull the ex manifold, but can be done, I'd get new ex gasket and vc gasket and make a day of it, good luck!

I replaced both gaskets when I got the motor along with exhaust manifold gasket. It's funny I remember back in late 80's my brother had a v6 ford and he would adjust his with the motor running.

Well I checked it and they were not loose, actually 3 were tight, I could not get the feeler gage between rocker and pushrod. I adjusted all 4 to .018 and it literally made no change to the tapping noise? is that indicative of something worse? Or is this just the sound of a 134 Fhead with 63 years on it?????

Actually my first thought was that it sounded pretty good, except it doesn't have that regular "putt" every few strokes that most F-heads do. Mine anyway.

A loud ticking can sometime be an exhaust leak at the manifold.

Well, it could just be that then, I only have an elbow shoved onto the original pipe that is connected to the manifold flange. So I can easily be hearing it there I guess. Thanks PeteL.

Mikes Carburetor parts sells a good rebuilding kit for the YF carbs. I'm currently rebuilding a YF for a guy

I actually got a Jiffy Kit off eBay in the mail today. Hopefully it will fix the YF

Rebuilt YF carb with NOS Jiffy kit. What a difference. The original accelerator pump shaft was seized onto the housing and there were no check balls in the original. It’s a wonder the Jeep even ran :bananatool::bananatool::bananatool::bananatool::bananatool:

    (y)

"and there were no check balls in the original."

Classic. People always lose them when they turn the YF carb upside down.
