Willys Powr-lok Differential Oil, Part No. 94557. Years ago I was told the special ingredient was Whale oil. Good luck finding that today!

    Powr-Lok good.

Yes, use regular 85W90 gear oil and put a package of friction modifier into it. You can try running without the friction modifier (using the low levels of friction modifier in most 85W90 gear oils), but I expect it will chatter without the extra juice.

I never used additional modifier in my Powerlocks, even new ones. I didn't have a problem with chatter. I'd say try it without the modifier and if it chatters in the turns, then add the modifier.

Friction modifier does more than just keep the clutches from chattering, it extends their life as well. It can make them slightly less aggressive though.

On mine, w/ 50k miles ( no idea on the last change from PO) it was chattering on street corners and you could see the tires wearing, almost an odd cupping of sorts.

Changed out oil, added modifier, ran smoothly after that, almost seemed quieter too.

I only used Powerlocks in the front axle so I didn't care about wear. I was looking for max traction. In a rear application where it's always in use I can see how accelerated wear might be an issue.

It's an old drag racer's trick to leave the friction modifier out for better hookup. My post was simply informational and not an indictment of any type ;).
