I need spare keys for my 1960 CJ5. Been to Walmart, True Value, Home Depot...no luck. Is a locksmith my only option?

Lot of people offer all kinds of keys on ebay, especially if you have the code number.

Including this one for 50 bucks…

The originals like the Jeep-logo key pictured above were Briggs & Stratton GRV-3 (Groove 3) keys. Several other vehicles, including the IH Scout and at least one of the big-rig trucks, also used that same keyway. You can find GRV-3 blanks on eBay.

Several other key brands (like Cole, Ilco, etc.) have replicated the GRV-3 pattern and call it a B5 key. There may be more than one B-pattern key that will also work in addition to the B5, but the B5 key will definitely fit. Most locksmiths would still have those blanks in stock, I would think.

That $50 key is an accessory (like glovebox) key with the round head. The original ignition keys had a hex shaped head.

To Donny's point....here are images of a set of original Kaiser-era Jeep ignition (octagonal head) and accessory / glove box (round head) keys, both of which use the same GRV-3 keyway:

....and of (non-Jeep-logo) NOS Briggs & Stratton GRV-3 blanks, which are frequently available on eBay and from other sources:

Again, as noted above, if you don't want to shell out the money to buy the B&S blanks, which at this point can be had for around $12-15 apiece, or the $50 Jeep-logo accessory key blank, there are several key manufacturers still making the B-5 key blanks that match the GRV-3 keyway.

Thanks for the info. I only have one key for my jeep and want to get a couple spares made. its the hex head with briggs&statton on one side and jeep on the other. I never knew the original keys were from b&s, i just assumed my key was an old copy made at hardware store.

Yep, Briggs & Stratton made not only the original Jeep keys, but also the lock cylinders for the ignition switches and the (optional) glove box locks, as well as the door locks on the trucks.

I recently went to the local locksmith with a door handle for a willys truck and wanted a key made and I didn't have one to copy. It was super singly cheap I thought. It was about 27 dollars for 2 keys with no originals. I was however suprised, confused, like wtf? When I noticed the key had literally one notch out of it. It works flawlessly just confused when I realized there must only be 1 tumbler in the lock. I had never seen that before

I wonder if the locksmith deleted a bunch of tumblers to make it easy.
