I went to do some research on some wheels for my 1971 cj5. I found some I liked. Well when it came down to it 4Wheel Parts says that the center hole on the wheel might not go over my hub. Mickey Thompson said they may or may not. The ones I was looking at are the MT Classic III in satin black. 15"X8" 5-5.5. The new rims center hole measures 4.193". The current white spoke rims on the jeep now measure 4.430. I'm confused. What to do. I really like those rims. Any thoughts would really help.

Get a set that fit a Suzuki Samurai. Should go right on there.

I just completed some similar wheel shopping for my 68 CJ5 project. Pretty sure you need 4.25" center hole to clear the front hubs. I ended up buying the American Racing AR172's (which look similar to the Mickey Thompson's, but with a little smaller holes). I haven't run them yet, but I did test fit them. Mine are polished aluminum, but they also make a satin black (Part number AR1725885B is 15x8, 5x5.5 with 108mm or 4.25197" center hole). Discount Tire Direct also carries a satin black Level 8 Tracker wheel that is even closer to the Mickey Thompson in looks. I am not sure of the center hole size, but if you call them, they can tell you...they are very knowledgeable.

Here is link to the American Racing AR172 wheel specs...

Thanks Tim E., I spoke with a salesman from 4WD parts and he told me the MT Classic III have center bore of 4.25" we will see. I also want the Interco super swamper Trxus in 31x10.50 R15. I have had them before and they work well.

    I hope everything works out

I used to run the Trxus MTs in 33s. They worked really well offroad and ran decent on the street. But, they were a bear to keep balanced and had weak sidewalls. Two of them developed nasty bubbles in the sidewall pretty early in their life.

Hope it all goes as expected, that combo should look very nice on there. I have heard it both ways with those wheels fitting, but maybe they have newer models that do in fact have the bigger center hole. Ordering them up is the way to find out for sure. I have BFG KM2's in 33x10.50. Discount Tire advised me to use 7" wide wheels for that tire width, but I honestly doubt it makes that much difference...and 8" wheels are a good option if you ever decide to go wider/bigger.

Hopefully you don't need it, but Summit also carries Eagle Alloys in the same size with a 4.26" center hole. Again, similar to the MT's, but with the faux beadlock...

    I wouldn't use a 7" rim with that tire

A 33x10.50 is a fairly narrow 33. Most 33s are 12.50 wide. A 7" rim is perfect for a 10.50, he'll have no issues whatsoever. I'm currently running 33x12.50s on stock XJ 7" rims with zero problems.

There is a good amount of flexibility on on what rims you run. The main difference will be in how wide/flat the tires APPEAR. Wider rims will kind of widen out the profile of the tire, giving them a slightly fatter footprint, and maybe look a bit boxier.

Smaller rims will kind of pinch the tires in a bit more, maybe holding them on the bead a bit better if you plan on serious off-roading.

I plan on buying 10 wheels for my 48 (street and off road sets) to make sure everything fits I am going to order 1 from Summit Racing to trial fit that way if something doesn't work out I only have to return one wheel. Then the other 9 will end up with free shipping as its well over the $99 free shipping threshold.

Well I ended up having to switch to the American Racing AR172. Good looking and have a 4.25 center bore. MT classic III center hole is only 4.193 and they say it will not fit over the dana 27 hub.

Glad you found something that fits and that you like. Maybe post a pic once you get the new sneakers all laced up.

Julius - is this what you went with AR172 - black or polished?
    American Racing AR172 Baja

edit - I see an early post already showed these.

Like-it! Definitely post up some pics. I like running a bit narrower rim for tires as it protects the rim more - but might subject your sidewalls to a bit more abuse. I think a 15x7 rim with 33x10.5 will be perfect! i used to run 15x8 rims with 33x12.5 tires on my cj7. I am currently running 15x8.5 rims with my 33x10.5s and I find the rim is a bit wide and has taken some abuse off road. Would prefer to have 15x7 rims but the 15x8.5 rims came with the jeep when I bought it and don't want the expense of buying something.
