Diamond is the Dana logo. Looks to be 72-76 if they are drum brake knuckles.

Thanks Daryl! I googled these open knuckles and had not seen the diamond on some of the photos. These actually have the 6 hole disk bracket so must still be that time frame...right?

If they came with a 6 hole mount then they are 76 to 78.

The "6 hole mount" is the caliper bracket for optional 76, and standard 77-78 disc brakes. So if the knuckle came with a 6 hole mount, you know that it was 76-78. 72-75 all came with drum brakes.

Pretty sure there were no disk brakes for CJs in 1976, and that they were optional in 1977. That's what my memory says. I can check the parts book later.

Don't know about the 6 hole mount, but I would guess that they changed to 5 (?) for 1979.

No. The "6 hole mount" was 76-78, optional in 76 or they could have been technically 77s but were sold in late 76. Most of the 76s came with 11" drums. It was basically a Chevy caliper mount that bolted to the six spindle bolts on the outside of the spindle, thus the "6 hole mount". In 79 they went to a cast into the knuckle "2 hole mount" that used two bolts to bolt the caliper bracket to the knuckle, thus the "2 hole mount". It lived 79 till 81 with it's own caliper. In 82 the mount and caliper changed again but the knuckle stayed the same. Part of the problem was so many changes in a few years and the aftermarket parts books are all over the place on what year fits what. Easily confused with the "5 bolt bearing hub" which came about in late 81 differing from the traditional Jeep bearing hub of 1941 origin. Ford also made knuckles with 5 bolts that held on the spindle which we in the Jeep community just throw away when we encounter them. So in five years they went from drums to three different caliper brackets, two different rotors, four different locking hubs and changed the bearing hubs in the middle of it. They increased the axle widths in late 81. 1986 knuckles were also enlarged and are the strongest knuckles. Clear as mud?

Thanks - I'll try to remember all those specifics. (y)

Re the '76 having disk brakes, I was hanging out (not working) at the Jeep dealer when the '76s were released, I looked at the new CJs with great interest, and there were no disk brakes for the CJ at that time. Additionally, the parts book does not show disk brakes for a '76 80-90. That indicates no 80-90 front disk brakes with a J6 VIN. It shows all wheel drum brakes available for the 80-90 through '77, and front disk brakes available for the '77-78 using the 6-hole bracket. It also shows the 2-hole bracket for '78-80 (which is what my book covers) so a '78 only had front disks, but could have either style bracket.
