Hello, I'm looking for some help on what year front fender will fit my 196o Willys CJ5. When I shop around on the net they are very specific and show the exact fit. The fender for my 1960 is expensive to what I see for some of the later years going for. I like the indent for the running light so I would like to buy that type. Will a later year fender with the indent for the running light fit the 1960? I can buy 2 of the later fenders for the price of one 1960.

I believe any fender up to and including 1971 will fit. I also believe the side marker light indent started in 1969. Fenders 1972 and later were longer and will not fit.

I installed a set of the later style and had to cut them to clear the shocks.

I found a set of 1968 cj5A fenders for $275 with good reviews. What is the difference between a CJ5A and a CJ5 is there a difference in fenders?

Not sure on A or not-A, but I bought the matching set of these:

Right Front Fender W/ Side Light Indent CJ5, CJ6 1969-1971

They are listed as 69-71, and needed to be modified to fit the shocks on my 57 (but they did work). The 55-68 fenders were about twice as much.

My experience tells me reproduction (and aftermarket/performance/etc) body panels always, whether metal or fiberglass, need to be altered to fit regardless of how much $ you spend to make that not happen. I have never had a 'bolt in' experience with a body panel. In this case, I chose to get the fenders that were half the price and will still work.

A CJ5A is the Tuxedo Park model. It is simply a high trim level of a CJ5, and the fenders are exactly the same. The 5A model was last produced in 1967, so none of these had the marker light recess you are looking for.
To widen your search, Postal Jeeps used the short version of the fender and had the marker light recess.

How good are your welding skills? The 1972-on fenders are the same as the early fenders except for the extra 5" added to the rear. You can cut that 5" off and weld the flange back, make some early fenders. Somebody ... Strlclan? ... showed this in a build thread a while back. The late fenders all have the clearance light recess too. It's true that the OEM sheet metal is the best, in terms of fit and steel thickness. Unfortunately, the front fenders get smashed pretty easily, so OEM fenders are not plentiful.

If you want postal fenders that are short with the light indent, try J&W in Antelope CA.
