im just wondering, i have a bunch of the 60's heater that mounts inside the engine bay on the driver side. and the one that came with my jeep mounts completly inside on the passenger side. just 2 hoses running through the firewall. it does not look factory, it has a plate on it from a used car parts place. but i heard that most of the time thats all the original heaters were, they just put whatever heater they could get in it.

does anyone have a picture of what the early heaters look like.
the tub im using now is a 66 so i really could go either way, but i would rather use the original one and patch thoes holes in the driver side firewall.

From what I've found out, I think that heater on the drivers side firewall started coming out stock from the factory in about 1957? I might be wrong though.

Here's a photo of Thad's Old Bill, which is a stock '57 I believe, and you can clearly see the cutouts on the firewall. Thad?

I forgot to mention that my '56 does not have those cutouts. My drivers side firewall is smooth and flat. Passenger side... that's another story, looks like it's had 3 or 4 aftermarket heaters mounted there.

Imagine my surprise to see that photo show up without me posting it!

Yes, that is completely 100% stock. '57.

For what it's worth, my "one owner" original '57 CJ5 has a heater (and defroster!) inside the firewall above the passengers feet. Looks stock to me.

My 1950 FWD truck had one too, already installed I'm pretty sure, when my grandfather purchased it "used" in 1951.

Felt like an emaciated mouse breathing on your foot.

That's the funniest description I've heard since Boyink coined the term "Placebo Heater".

    Sparky,

No kidding, in the winter I drove with the window open, otherwise the windshield would ice-up - on the inside. I learned to exhale out the driver's side window.

Vacuum wipers in snowstorms are another whole story, too.

I don't doubt you Pete. I just found the description one of the more imaginative ones I've heard.

    Thanks for the appreciation, Sparky.

Friend of mine calls them "psychological heaters" ....they make you *think* you are warmer.

When I lived in Indiana, my CJ 7 would ice up on the inside, even with the defroster on! :( JEEP heaters are kind of like electric starters on British motorcyles, mostly useless, but they make you feel good to say you have one.... R)

Cee Jay!!! Is that the heater in your '55? Is it still mounted/installed? Does it have the defroster blower mounted on top? That looks just like the heater that Clay gave me, and I need some detailed photos of how it's mounted. If you can get some I'll be forever in your debt!!!

Here's the heater that Clay gave me, I'm restoring it right now, need to pick up the core at the radiator shop. Does anybody know where I can get new motors? NAPA doesn't have any that small. The defroster motor I can fudge and get one slightly larger, but the main motor fits in a tight space and has to be the same size. I'm looking at paying through the nose and having it rebuilt.

Hey Ron, That's the same one that was in my '56 too. Mounts on the passenger side up as high as it will fit. As far as I remember it doesn't use existing holes (if there are any) on the tub. I don't have a pic of the firewall but can try and post one up. Are you staying 6 volt or 12?

Have a look at the firewall diagrams in the tech section, there are factory knockouts for the Harrison heater. I just recieved a heater from CeeJay that matches up to the knockouts perfectly, see this thread for a pic.

Ron, looks like your mounting rods might be "clocked" around a bit from the one I have. If they don't match the factory locations I'd suggest you move'em to match- I promise I won't tell anybody you did it

I tried the motors on mine & even at 12 volts the defroster doesn't move a lot of air :(. I'm considering adding an inline blower like this hidden up behind the dash. This is a common upgrade for the rather anemic VW Bug heaters.

Well, that's good news SIDSCJ!! Glad to hear that's what your '56 had in it. Any photos you may have would be mucho appreciated. Same with everyone else, if you have or can make some photos of this type heater installed, please pass 'em on to me!

Thank you too, Howard! I'm not terribly concerned about keeping toasty warm, my Jeep won't be used much in bad weather so that's not too big of a concern. I just want to put the right one in there and have it workable.

Sounds like I have the right one, now I just need to know how/where to mount it. My biggest question is, does the "Willys" badge run flat and level, or does it run at that jaunty diagonal angle like in Cee Jay's photo?

That is how it mounts Rondog. Of course, (I never had a heater in mine!) - blatant lie that will someday not be known as a lie!
