I hate to be ignorant and annoying, but as I mentioned in another thread, I have an unknown year CJ2A...most likely 47/48. Anyways, I need a new front axle, t-case, and transmission (among other things). There is a guy locally that has a 1970 CJ5 and is parting at too good a deal to pass up. He sent me a bunch of pictures, but I'm having trouble IDing what they are and if they'll work.

I have pics in an email, if anyone has a good eye at this stuff wouldn't mind checking them out for me to help identify, I'd be greatly appreciative. I can see his engine is a F-134, but all the rest is up in the air! I believe it should have a Dana 25 up front...but probably doesn't have the Dana 41-2 in the rear. I have some pics, just don't have an axle on my CJ2A to compare it!

All the rest is unknown...so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! I promise I'll buy shop manuals and read up from now on so I don't post stupid questions, but I don't want to miss out on a good deal. Thanks

The things you need should definately fit. It's not exactly the same, but it all bolts up, including the rear axle.

A F134 '70 would be a good parts source. Pretty sure the rear axle is a flanged offset Dana 44, the best axle available for that Jeep that's not custom built. The front will be a Dana 27, very similar to the Dana 25. Like GJ wrote, the axles will bolt up. Ratios could be 4.27:1 or 5.38:1.

Transmission - Borg-Warner T-90C (also good if you stay with a Jeep 134), Dana 18 transfer case which might be a twin or single stick (tell us which - it's an open question which one was original).

I'd take all of it, including the F134, which will also work if you fit a shorter carb (see the CJ-3B page for more).

If it's cheap, jump on it! Lots of good stuff for you.

Didn't think the flanged 44 would be until the '71, but could be wrong. Everthing else should fit as a replacement for what would have been in the 2A. The only difference might be the 'post' type of tcase mount on some of the early 2As.

thanks guys! he's practically giving it away so I'm going to go for it. I'm debating what to do with the engine...right now my Jeep has a Buick V6 in it, and I was planning on keeping that if I can get it going (trying this weekend)...but if it's junk, I could throw the other engine in. Luckily I have parts to rebuild either one of them through work.

    Thanks for the responses!

The purists will say stay with a F134, and there is nothing wrong with that. In my opinion the F134 is very reliable but gutless, the V6 is nearly as reliable and has more than double the horsepower. The V6 will be cheaper to rebuild if need be, the flatheads are getting real pricey to rebuild.
I have a Jeep V6 in my CJ2A and it is real fun to drive, and it can easily get out of its own way.

go for it. you can always part it out and what ever you don't need use as trading stock.

the flanged 44 was available in 70, I have one.

check to see if it has a build date sticker on the drivers side dash, the info is very helpful for the vin project:)

The F134 is an upgrade over the 2A's L134, but not to the same degree as the V6.

The CJ-5 uses a T-90C, which will bolt up to either the L134 or F134. To bolt up to a GM engine (the V6), you'll need the flywheel, clutch and bell from the GM engine, an adapter, a new input shaft for the transmission, and (because it's a T-90C) you'll also need a new cluster gear for the transmission.

If you were remove the V6 to use the F134, you'd need to put the motor mounts back to what they were originally, but you won't need a lot more parts.

I believe my work will have most if not all of that, minus the adapter. As long as it's doable, I'm going to go for it.

You guys are life savers! (and/or money)

    I certainly wouldn't yank a running V6 to put in an F134.

Buy this Jeep!! Every thing will fit with minor modification. I personally would try very hard to keep the Buick V-6. More power and easier to maintain, Just my advice, Matt W.

For the other posters, IIRC this Jeep is a 2WD conversion with a V6 and automatic, so it's not quite as easy to keep the V6 as it would be in the usual CJ. But yes, I too would go with the V6 if I could. If the budget were tight, the F134 would be an option ... just wanted to point that out.

I picked up all the parts from the 70 CJ5! I contacted Novak-adapters and am going to try to stick with the T90 and will have to verify everything that I have first, then rebuild it so it will take the adapter kit and hopefully get this thing going soon.

Side note, got it to spark and turn over! It was missing the power lead to the HEI.

    It is a single stick...

I got the tag number off it. Haven't opened it up or removed it from the f-134 yet to figure out exactly what it is, but here are the numbers:
    300146-6
    937229

The transmission had a build date on it of 11/1/69 and had T90A on it. I think I've read though that the cases generally said that even if it was a T90C internally.

    Any thoughts?

Upgrading to a CJ5 mechanically is a good choice. I will recommend a sm420 transmission over the T90. I still have the T90 in my 3a and have been wanting to swap since the first ride. I really love the 225 v6. D30 front with disc brakes and the '70 D44 are great in flatfenders. If you must have a T90, I'm ready to pull my T90 so the adaptor will be available. What's a used adaptor worth to you?

    Thanks for the good advice.

I'm 50/50 what to do now. So far, I can't even identify what year my 225 came out of...none of the casting numbers seem to match up with ANYTHING I've read. I also ordered a fuel pump and it was of course the wrong one, and I'm having trouble finding the right one even with a picture catalog.

I could either buy the adapter (new or used), buy a bellhousing from a GM motor, and go from there, or I can use the F-134 and all I'd have to do is relocate the motor mounts, and find a smaller carb to clear the hood.

The 225 has HEI distributor which is nice, but I'm hesitant because of the trouble finding stuff already and the fact that the T90 isn't a great combo with that engine.

    What to do...what to do...:?

Post pics of your motor - if the castings don't match what we have, what makes you think it's a 225?
