What Transmission Is This In Pic?

    The top looked like a T90 (I think), but the D18 is single stick which I thought would indicate large hole D18, and that wouldn't necessarily work with T90? Is it a T86 maybe?

    Maybe it’s a T14 with the bell housing adapter left on it.

    I have the T14 with v6 adapter, and although its been a bit since I had it out or the tunnel cover off and saw the top - it doesn't look like I remember the T14....I am thinking the T86 had to use a similar adapter?

    Where is the pic hosted? I can't see it.

    T-86 and T-14 adapter are the same AFAIK. Same front and rear patterns.

    Adapter looks aluminum (aftermarket), so I'd guess T-90.

    Where was the original pic hosted? I'd like to know who blocks pictures when I deny trackers.

    Can you mount a T90 to a large hole D18....I guess there is a ring that can be used to reduce the hole size.....

    I plucked the pic from FB....

    It's definitely not a T-14. The front of shift tower is flat above the shift rails and the middle bolts on the sides are not in line with the corner bolts on a T-14.

    The output bearing adapter from the T-86 w/D-18 large hole will work on the rear of T-90 to adapt it to the D-18 large.

    I had a new '69 CJ5 with an F-head and single stick t-case. Not sure if that answers your question. Was a 3 speed so had to have been a T-90.

    IIRC the F-head got the T-90 to the very end. The T-86 and T-14 only appeared behind the 225 in that era.

    IF its been done like most of the Chevy transplants - it should be an aftermarket adaptor for the Chevy Bell to T90. The kits from Novak in the day had the input, bearing retainer, and Bell adaptor (have a set in the shed that was behind a Chevy to T90).

    My best guess is thats a T90J. No telling on big or small hole transfer case. '64-'65 F134 Tux had a single stick w/small hole. '66-up w/Dauntless were single stick w/big hole.
    That does look like an aftermarket adapter stained from the iron case its bolted to.

    Obviously an aftermarket adapter plate.
    The adapter plate appears to accept mounting bolt for the TC single stick bracket.
    Very likely a Trans-Dapt .
    The front face of the transmission is not square like the T86aa so I say it must be a T90 J.
    After all that certainly appears to be a 1-1/8” ten spline MDG.
    Also note that the shift tower is of an earlier design without access for backup switch.

    T90j seems pretty accurate then for a sbc adaptation....I just didn't know that single stick, small hole D18 existed....guess I always thought small hole were always twin stick.....ok, I don't need another t90j etc....

    Yes that is definitely a small index bore transfer case. Notice that the case only has a single cast shift rail thimble.

    As you can tell, I am browsing transmissions....found this sm465 for $30....According to seller, "The 465 needs rebuild kit, bearings are shot on center gear."

    That seems odd to me...I would assume the gear is on the main shaft with splines, and the bearings are only for the input shaft and mainshaft output? Maybe he means blocking rings/synchronizers? Anyway...for $30 seems like it might be worth adding to my collection. The Novak D18 adapter kit uses a new mainshaft anyway - just so long as the gears are good. I find the 465 to be just too large in physical size to want to deal with in on my cj, but thinking it might work better in the wagon. Combine that with a D18 (and an expensive adapter) and an OD, and that should be a pretty nice set-up....wonder how much floor pan work would be needed. I could use the bell as well...

    Borg Warner transmission operation:

    Under power the main drive gear (input) will always drive the countershaft gear (cluster).
    The countershaft gear is then driving all of the gears that are on the main shaft (top gears) at the same time.
    Because the top gears are of different diameters they must all turn at different velocities.
    That means they need all be spinning on a separate bearing upon the main shaft.
    Various types of gear bearings are used on various models of transmissions.
    It is the synchronizer assemble that is splined directly to the main shaft.
    When a synchronizer assembly is engaged to a specific gear then that gear effectively becomes engaged to the main shaft.
    Rotation is then transmitted to the main shaft gear (transmission output)
    Only the main shaft gear is splined directly to the main shaft and all other gears on the main shaft must have the ability to spin independently until engaged.

    Hmm...I assume the T14 the same way?.....don't remember those details from the rebuild....
