this was the first i thought, but, it turns and there is a wheelbearing inside..... and in a spare mount i see no need for a bearing......

Quite common on boat trailers to carry spare bearings as well as wheel. I have had bearings go out as well as tires. Maybe someone decided to carry around a spare bearing and that seemed like any easy way to carry, odd quick disconnect though

Whatchacallit for the doohickey.. I'm stumped.. jwinsley's idea seems to be reasonable, spare hub and bearing assy.. Not a bad idea if that's the case.. Gives me an idea for my spare tire carrier and an old D27 front spindle I have laying around though!

Could it be a spindle that is to be slid into tubing and welded and cross-pinned to create a trailer axle?

Gerald, FWIW, that wheel in the picture is a motor wheel. Notice the raised sections on the opposite side of the lugs from the hub. CJ2A guys love those things.
