What Did You Do To Your Jeep Today?

Sometimes this is as major as getting one started.

 

Today we bought some 30x9.5 BFG KM2 tires for the Jeep. It is now safe to drive above 10mph with the new tires. It now after driving it about 20 miles tonight, is very obvious it needs springs/shocks rather soon. But no noises we didn't expect, it steers rather well for a manual box. The T-18 is smooth and quiet. Overall not bad for a first real drive.

Soon as we returned home the blower fan quit for the heater, and the speedometer quit this morning going to the tire store. So...lots more to do LoL

Question.... anyone make a 15x7 smoothie wheel for these (1974 CJ) that is affordable?

 

Turned a lot of nuts and bolts today working on clutch/brake pivot shaft.

 

Went to finish the epoxy primer on the tub this afternoon.

combination of grinding some old junk off, sanding, body filler where needed, and more sanding and more sanding to get rid of the orange peel because I'm trying to figure out the sprayer... (got that minimized now).

Wet sanded the dickens out of the tub then went back and hand-sanded areas that were still rough or where my former prep looked like I'd used a brush.

Realized I did a poor job of prep in some areas prior, so sanded down and then wet sanded.

then rinsed, dried, and blew off with air.

Came back and sprayed a pot of epoxy primer over the fresh metal and where I'd sanded the bondo smooth (had epoxy under it to start).

When I was sure everything was dry, I shot a pot of epoxy primer. I managed to get a long way with that one pot. Got a bit dark as I was cleaning up, so I'll see tomorrow if I am happy with the results.

Saginaw conversion is complete. Turns so easy it is a bit scary, I've got to get used to it. Also I thought I had an exhaust leak, spent the past few days "fixing" it. But my exhaust system is as tight as a drum now, but there is still a lot of noise from the #1 cylinder area. I think I have a dry lifter or a sticky valve from sitting idle all winter during this steering conversion.

I still have to put the winch back on.

Put the jeep to work doing "jeep stuff" Spraying poison oak.

 

May be I can come up and get some saplings from you? I need to transplant a field of it across the street from my inlaw's place in a creek bottom on a 'bank' of the creek that's flat that the stinking homeless think is a free campground and they bring all of their trash, needles and they don't bury their turds...

Let's just say if I were to plant about 1000 sq ft of poison oak and stinging neddles, I think they'd keep the hell out.

I started off with about 3 acres of poison oak hillside. I started off and mowed with a bobcat during the winter a couple years ago. Now I'm just mopping up the seedlings and a few large oaks that are infested with poison oak vines.

 

Sand blasted frame and painted. Nothing but problems, but it's done. springs and drums coming off once it's back in my garage.

 

Are the gas tanks worth fixing? any ideas

Well, after removing my front/down pipe, I found that it was in pretty good shape... needing a clean up and maybe hitemp paint. The studs holding it to the manifold, though, were toast... rusty beyond belief, and barely any thread.

SO... I have been diligently soaking them daily for about a week with pb blaster, and then heated and melted some parafin into the tops... I then tried to double-nut the studs, but not enough thread to bite. I then decided that the smart(?) thing to do would be weld the nut to the stud and try to back it out THAT way. Nope. Figuring that hope was nigh, I gave them another soak & heat and went after them with ViseGrips. SNAPPPPPPP!!!

Only thing to do now is remove the manifold & intake... which was looking like more broken bolts ahead. I soaked them with PB and went off to work this morning.

Because I am afflicted with impatience... once I returned home (early! nice!) from work, I grabbed by breaker bar and the appropriate socket and gave one a gentle go... just... to... see........

It came off. Easily. Shockingly easily. So did ALL OF THE REST!!!!!

I feel like I got away with something, like I got (unusually) lucky. While I wasn't initially intending to degrease and paint the engine or manifolds... seems like that's where I've found myself in the rabbit hole. More fun tomorrow.

IMHO, sure.
Extreme cleaning and surface prep is the key.

Then soldering is easy. I've also used fiberglas sucessfully, or two-part epoxy tank patch putty.

 

Damn it! I figured out today why you can't use a rear dump manifold from a 1980 buick. The exhaust ports are smaller than the oddfire 225, the manifold won't cover the exhaust ports on the head.if I had researched on this forum I would have seen others had already figured this out.

I have ceramic coated the fender well exit headers and mufflers. It is fantastic for keeping the interior heat down.
