image.jpeg Real easy to cut welds with cutoff wheel and knock it off with a hammer. Cleaned up nice. Some cuts on the chop saw and my second rate welding.

Fabricated a radiator to cowl support rod today out of 5/16 x 36” hot rolled plain steel rod ($3 Tractor Supply). Never had one since I’ve owned it, just supported by upper radiator hose.

Ran die on one end, fired up oxy/acetylene torch for 90 degree bend, cut to length then cut threads on other end.

Chasing a couple electrical issues (burned out bulbs) and noticed my front parking light shields were cracked and broken (well kind of knew that), but as they are only held on by 2 of the 3 screws - water is getting into the housing and puddling at the bottom and causing some rust on the bottom of the light housing. I repaired one of the plastic light covers with some glue/epozy - but its looking iffy as to how long it will hold. The other was missing a good size chunk so its going into the trash. Ordered 2 new cheapo ones from Crown (4wheelparts) and will pick-up tomorrow for 8.99 total.

But the felt gaskets under the covers was completely wasted and falling apart to dust. So I made a couple from Fel-pro rubber-fiber gasket sheet: Many its good I don't do delicate surgery - not the best with the exacto knife...but it should work. New bulbs and light covers all fitting together properly - hopefully...

Replaced the clutch master and rebuilt the pull-style slave cylinder on my CJ5 last night. Both were Wilwood parts as installed by PO when the 4.3L was modded into the rig. Was having to add fluid and on below 20 degree days I was loosing clutch action completely! Old master probably can be rebuilt. Saving it for possible use on one of my Commandos in a hydraulic clutch conversion.

Adjusted the points and readjusted the leaky solex. Runs better now. I caved and bought a bikini top so I don't have to drag the tarp out and put it on every time it rains.
I got a tail light to work and the other comes on when it wants.

Replace the water pump in Ted and then a brake line that blew immediately after finishing that project up.

I spent two days with my two jaw puller and a blowtorch fighting a pitman arm. Went to flaps today, bought a $25 pitman puller. Had it off 90seconds after getting home:banghead:

I used a BFH and wailed on it about 6 times, popped right off... after soaking it in PB blaster for a day or so. Steering gear I'm using is a core - prior to my pitman arm removal.

I welded two pieces of 3" stock together to make a 6" square plate out of 3/16": welded that to a piece of galvanized pipe (outdoors, out of the smoke), drilled 6 holes and welded some 3/8 nuts to one side on it to make a light weight adapter for a motor stand to adapt to my other motor stand (rotisserie for the tub).

Cleaned up a rough piece of 4in pipe and cut it to 5.5" to go thru the cross member for the steering gear. I might have a little extra, but need to cut and fit it. Have NOT tackled that yet. Need to hop out of the foxhole and start shooting, er drilling holes.

While standing in the shadow of the jeep tub, I welded a yard ornament 'stick frame' thing a new mount for the ornament (about a 6" x 6" tile shape - chinese junk metal turned to pancake rust). Painted pink for wife. Tomorrow will mount the ornament on the frame and use a little epoxy to help secure it to the three machine screws.

I went over the front clip looking for stress cracks I missed prior. I found a couple. Sanded, welded up. Re-sanded. Waiting for weather to clear to re-prime.

Took a break from that and went for a bicycle ride around the neighborhood with my lovely wife and our daughter. We managed to snake around enough streets to get about 3.25 miles. Nice to shake a little cabin fever loose. Had to first clean the bikes, air up the tires, lube the chains and all that jazz.

Finished the rotisserie. Really pretty darn simple. I used some very thin ornametal fence metal for the rear support, and a piece of 1/2 by 1 1/2 rectangle for the front. Piece of 1/8 x 1 1/2 flat stock from the scrap bucket to hold the middles together.

I picked up the engine stands at an auction a while back for about $70, came with a rack that is about 8ft x 3ft and some big hard wheels - I have about two pallets of bricks stacked on it at the moment (~5000lbs give or take). Roll it around from time to time lately, taking my bricks for a little mosey.

I sanded a lot of this rustole primer off (it's rusting through, and I don't want the patina). I'll finish sanding more tomorrow, then wipe it with some acetone, and shoot it with some epoxy primer.

    SIGH.

I wish I'd just bought epoxy primer to start. I'd have saved money AND TIME, I think vs. the couple dozen cans of shake n shoot primer. (quick math: $75/case of 12 rustoleum primer). I know more now...

We need a sticky titled something like "Before You Shoot, Before You Spray ... Paint" or something. Basics of prep, basics of using the HF purple spray rig and the pressure you need (I've been running 40, but may up to 50). Using PPG or other professional primers... Whether or not to use a thinner - and how much (acetone / etc.). Cleaning. Basic mask needs (prep AND spraying - dust boogers and chemical nasties shouldn't be inhaled). Sanding, wet sanding the primers, same for the top coat. I'm using a 1-step product for my top coat. don't forget filler - bondo or other? Metal filler and grind...

I clamped a piece of 1" thick, 3" flat stock along a dent, then I beat the tar out of it best I could from inside the tool box. What a fargn bit of fun. Got it all nearly good. Used a piece of 1" thick flat stock as a 'ram-rod' so I could swing from outside the box...

Came back later, and clamped a piece of 2" x 3/8 flat stock along bottom edge so I could beat that back into shape as well just below the bigger dent.

Need to do some basic dolly work next. I've found that a nice piece of 1" flat stock works well on the flat body panels.

I have avoided using heat so far. I had previously applied a bed liner to the sandblasted under-side. Trying to not melt out most of that if possible, not sure of the repair efforts yet.

Finally got around to fixing up my other hard top door. I bought the passenger side for a couple of hundred bucks but like the driver side it had been wrecked. First I had to fix the latch as it kept wanting to skip over the activator.

A little tig weld on top.

Since the door was blue, I painted the upper half to match the top adn skinned it with aluminum instead of trying to match the paint. I plan on some alu rocker gaurds so it should all match with the alu bumpers and fuel tank skid.
Finally roller down windows and no more zipper plastics

All loaded up and ready for Moab leaving in the AM.

    First the good news:
    1) My Saginaw conversion is about 95% done
    2) I learned that not all Russell hose end fittings are compatible with any Russell powerflex hose, just specific ones.
    3) the free junk yard power steering pump I got when I bought the high mount bracket works incredibly well!

    Now the bad news:
    1) it takes about 6 hours to clean up 32 ounces of power steering fluid from the garage ceiling, your wife's Honda Odyssey, the freezer, the garage wall, and the garage floor. This has to happen after learning #2, above.
