I am doing a full rebuild of a 75 cj5 with a 258. I am going to convert it to power steering while its in pieces, but I can not find a source for a 2 groove water pump pulley. Is there an aftermarket part number out there that would work. Any non-AMC make/models I could source one from. I have managed to find everything else but the pulley for the conversion. Thanks.

Thanks, That was what I was after. I had bought almost everything else from ebay, but I had not seen that pulley in my searches.

So I have the pulley but it's offset is not deep enough. It came from a late model cj. Can I switch out the water pump to a later model 258 to make everything line up? It seems easier to find a pump than the pulley.

This is a common problem for 232/258 Jeep owners who want power steering. Successful owners seem to have picked all the pieces they needed from a single donor. Many times owners have posted here with this sort of trouble, trying to piece together what they need from multiple sources.

In my parts book, I count seven different crank pulleys for Jeep sixes, 1974-1980 without dealer air (AC), and an additional instance with dealer AC (American Air). Most of these variants came with factory AC. There is a single number for pre-75 without AC, then a single number for 1975 through 1981 without AC (and I presume onward, as long as v-belts are used), regardless of PS or not. Jeep PN 3224690. So your factory crank pulley should work with power steering, if you have the other parts right.

The 1974 and earlier PS is completely different, with a second crank pulley bolted to the front of the existing crank pulley, and the PS pump mounted on the right side of the engine. In 1975, the pump moves to the left side, and uses the existing crank pulley.

Do you know what Jeep or AMC vehicle your other parts came from?

My motor is the original 258. I just found another pulley off ebay that I am going to try from a 79 cj. I have the brackets and PS pump off of a 81 eagle 258 I believe. Its fits the block fine. The pulley just seems to be offset by a 1/2 inch or so from lining up with the pump. Are the water pumps interchangeable with between the various 258's? I am in the middle of Wyoming, so not many options for finding donor vehicle with everything I need.
Pictures would be great as I still have not found a gear box that I am comfortable using. Right now i have the body of taking care of all the rust so i have a few more months before I can even get it running again.
Thanks for the additional info. This is my first rebuild of any vehicle and I have leaned a ton from all of the posts on this board.(y)

There are different water pumps for the 258, but they are not separated by PS or no PS. They should all fit the engine, regardless. The 1980 and later pump is different from the '75-79 pump, but my book does not tell me how. I don't have an Eagle book, but the RockAuto site shows the Airtex pump for a 1981 Eagle is the same as a 1980 or later Jeep. Assuming the later water pump lines up the WP pulley with the PS parts, then your crank pulley and alternator would not line up with the water pump.

If you are friendly with your FLAPS, they might order one for you and let you look at it before you take it. Does not cost them anything other than labor ... the warehouse will take it back.

Note sure what sort of Frankenbuild I have for my power steering, but I bought a 258 74 model year water pump and it did not line up correctly even though I have a 74.
I ended up getting a 75 waterpump that did fit correctly. With the 74 wp everything fit perfectly except the PS pulley.
I would be happy to get #'s off of parts if it would help
Since my radiator had as many pinholes as a proper swiss cheese I replaced that at the same time as the water pump

I will say though, I was able to limp home from Malibu, Ca to Ventura, Ca with a totally broken water pump shaft and a fan that was rattling like crazy everytime i came to stop. I figured worse case scenario I would send a fan blade through the radiator (which since it was swiss cheese needed replacing anyway)
Crazy enough it was on the Fourth of July last year and happened to be low 70's on the coast, for which I was glad; otherwise it would have been an exspensive tow home (I don't have AAA)

Jvent. It looks like you have a single belt from the crank, WP, and PS pump? I have a single pulley on my PS pump, but a a double pulley on my water pump. was your water pump pulley original? I was thinking of running a 2 belt system, but it may be easier to get a single belt to line up. Hopefully the new pulley I bought will be here in the next day or so and it works. The picture really helps though(y). It sounds like there is no consistency in this set up even within the same years.
    Thanks for the help

Im trying to remember since this was last year when I went through all this. I am no where nearly knowledgeable about this stuff as others here but here's sort of what I recall. Previous to 1974 there was no PS steering option available from the factory, 1975 it became a factory option. The set-up I have on mine was put in in the early 80's
I bolted up the 74 WP that I got from Napa
    PART #:TFW 43008
    PRODUCT LINE:Tru-Flow Water
Of course it fit the engine but collided with the PS and its mounting bracket

I ordered a 75 WP and that was an exact match
    PART #
    TFW 43000
The crank pulley I have is a double, The outer belt going to the alternator and inner serving the PS pump then WP

ps Dont know if it helps at all but the PS I have has a double pulley itself which I always thought could be used to run a power take off pump in line with the pulley
