I have a "new" water pump installed. This one has a nipple where the previous one had some kind of temperature sensor. Also I would like to lnow what is the purpose of the plug right above it on the head. Thanks!

Would that help cooling the head? Is there an advantage to have it? I am undecided yet to use the heater (south florida "cold climate" is around 60 degrees) but I want to keep all the options on the table. My heater was not leaking when I took it down and the blower worked fine.

From what I’ve been told, 60 is just about right for the designed heat range.

You have to figure the engineers who put it there had a good reason to do so.

If you don't have a heater or you have a valve that shuts flow off completely the bypass is a good idea to keep the water pump flowing. Otherwise i believe you will have issues with the pump, thermostat, overheating.
On mine it ran the driver side heater.

A temperature sensor there would only tell you how hot the water from your radiator is.
It would be like checking the oil pressure in the pan.

I know! I design and fabricate fixtures for the medical industry. I work around brilliant engineers and everything (almost) has a serious, definite purpose. I respect that and that is why I was asking.:bananatool:

On my previous water pump, the heater was coming out of the port that it shows as plugged on this one, to the left of the pump.
I could never find a valid reason to have a sensor there, I was just stating how it was.

Mine has never had a heater and is plugged there. Seems to run fine. Was it a year thing?

Mine has always had a plug too, I've wondered about the reason also.

Soooo... should I connect the fitting to the plugged hole in the head? Is there any advantage cooling wise?

I have seen both setups, plugged and not. My 57 had the bypass hose setup.

Any advantage to that setup? I most definitively will do it but just asking...

I wonder if using it could cause it to have a cooling issue since less water would go through the radiator.

I’m beginning to think it was a communist plot from the 50’s. I mean really, why would they have both?

I'm just speculating, but I imagine the by-pass could even out the temperatures in the block, possibly prevent hot spots or steam pockets under certain conditions. Jeeps were designed to perform anywhere from Alaska to Australia.
