Water in oil

    Got a flat head with water leaving the radiator and entering the block. Replaced head gasket. Motor does not have white smoke. Getting ready to pull the motor. Anybody know of any good ways to find the leak?

    Honestly, the only good way is to tear it down and have the parts magnafluxed IMHO. Any good machine shop should be able to do it for you. Even if you could find it another way, other than the head gasket there's not a whole lot you can do to fix an internal leak...

    If it turns out to be a cylinder wall leak then you can have the block sleeved. That will seal any cylinder wall cracks.:) Any cracks any where else, I think you are in line for a new block. good luck.:cry:

    I am going to try to fill the block with water and maybe pressurize it with air. I have a couple other blocks if I need them. But if I found a leak in a harmless place; Couldn't I weld it with nickel 99 rods?

    If the leak is in a water jacket, I highly doubt that you'll ever get it to seal for long by welding it. Welding cast iron is a tricky proposition under any circumstance, and if you have another good block lying around I would recommend that you use it.

    what we have done in the past on deisals is to pull the pan and pressurise the cooling system go under the motor and look for leaks.
    good luck

    welding cast is hard because the crack most of the time will run even when stop drilling.

    If you really don't want to tear it down any time soon you might try a bottle of ceramic seal. Moroso sells it for cracked heads and blocks. I cracked a head on my race car several years ago. Took out the spark plug and fired it up. Pumping water out big time. Dumped in a bottle of ceramic seal and left it running. After about 10 minutes it quit leaking. Ran the rest of the season. Probably would have ran longer but I hated to chance it. Just a thought, might get you by...

    mine had a crack from the bottom of the cylender all the way up to the valve seat. They welded it and its great now. He said they can weld almost anyhing in the block. Doesnt cost much either :) good luck

    K&W makes a similar product called block sealer. Works great! Used it on my F-head when the head cracked. Nickmil

    Pulled the motor, pulled the crankshaft out, pulled the pistons out from the bottom, ran a radiator hose from the water pump to the thermostat housing. Shot some air into the block drain valve. Found the leak somewhere in the distributer shaft hole. I don't see any reasonable way to repair it. Time for the new block I guess.
