On way home from work last Thursday my OD got stuck in Gear. Of course my boys and I were planning on driving it out to the Memorial 4x4 Off-road Rally in Wisconsin on Friday. Murphy and his damned law.

Long story short, I pulled the OD apart and found one of the synchro dogs broken in half. I extracted the broken pieces and spring and reassembled, in Direct drive, so we could run in the event. Flat-towed the Jeep out to Wisconsin and had a blast!

    Now for my question...
I just changed the fluid in the T90 and D18 about three weeks prior to the breakdown. Filled both units with 80W90 until it spilled back and closed’em up. When I pulled the OD off, it seemed like the synchros and planetary gears were dry?!? Is there a separate OD fill process, or does that system just not oil very well?

Thanks in advance for any input!
    Patrick

The overdrive oils out of the tcase. Make sure the oil is full, and MAKE SURE the oil scoop (the little stamped metal arm that sticks into the tcase) is installed.

The procedure is to fill, run for a little bit to distribute the oil into the OD & then top up.

Anytime I've pulled mine apart it was plenty oily- do you have the oil scoop installed?

Did you use mineral oil or GL1 rated oil? If you used GL5, it will eat away the yellow metals in the transmission.
