I open this new thread to report my engine swap and saginaw steering conversion.

I just ordered to the car's cemetery that next injured car with the VW 1.9 TD engine in good condition will be mine. Why this engine, because i think that is good engine, fuel efficient and are available a lot of spares for it.

I will have to think how to adapt the engine to the tranny, if to use the VW bellhousing and adapt to the tranny or use mine and adapt it to the engine...

I have looked here, but my Viasa has different tranny and bellhousing

    http://overlanddiesel.com/71/89.html

Well, when I have the engine at home I will see how to do it...

For the saginaw steerig, what about a manual box ? Can you link me some boxes for adapt and where to buy it? I don't want a power steering and the extra work (if someone has one to sell in good condition send me a PM)

The main issue in adapting bellhousings is the length of the input shaft vs. the depth of the bellhousing. If the VW bell is deeper than the original Willys bell, you may be able to use the longer input shaft available for the T-90. Most engine swaps to the T-90 use this longer shaft, and it is still available as a new aftermarket part.

Once the input shaft is longer than the bell depth, you can make an adapter to go between the transmission and bellhousing.

    hth!

Thanks for the information, I have adapted engines to a tranny in the past; I have experience on that.

You refer to the VW engine or the longer input shaft?

I'll start to post pics when I will have the donor at home.

I have found a lot of 1.9 TDI 110hp. engines for €900aprox. , but I don't like this swap because these cars has a lot of electronics like codified key, CPU, tons of sensors, electronic accelerator, etc, and the worst is that these electronic engines doesn't have torque if the turbo don't boost.
More easy and practise the 1.9 TD without electronics. I hope that the car I will find has AC. compressor to install an onboard air.

I was thinking that this engine it's popular in the States, if you Google "samurai VW diesel engine" you will find tons of information from the States. Over here in Europe we have tons of these engines and nobody swap to a VW diesel, the most popular engines swaps are to 1.6 16V from a suzuki swift donor.

When you need something for VW send me a PM !

Oh, it's a popular swap yes, but it's not common to find a VW TDI. Not like finding a Buick V6 or certainly not a Chevy small block.

Very cool , I was tempted to do a VW swap ,I knew were a rabbit with the 1.6 is for $200 . But I have experience with the perkins and they are pretty common over here especially the 236 and 203.

Something you maywant to think about. They do this swap for suzuki samuris. Samurais have a very similar wheelbase as the willys. Get the VW motor, and get a samurai tranny and tcase. The Samurai Tcase is offset in the rear and will work just fine. This way you will benefit from a 5 speed tranny and its overdrive. The samurai stuff is very good and you can get all kinds of low gear sets for the Tcase. I would have loved to do this swap with my samurai :)

You can also adapt the VW to Toyota trans/transfer case.I wanted to put the 1.6 in mine but finding a decent one at a resonable price didnt happen for me.A really nice one could be had for about $2500, the adapters about $1000.Gl with your build it should be really kewl.

A good friend of mine has a 1.6TD in his sami. I donated the turbo and manifolds from one of my VW rabbit projects. It's an awesome motor for the sami, and would be equally awesome in a flatfender (as long as you can get over the part about putting non-Jeep parts in, hehe). The power and torque are a lot different...it's a different wheeling experience, you need to re-learn what gears work for what, but the torque and power of a diesel in a little old rig is awesome. My friend runs veg oil in his in the summer too, so it's just plain cool to hear the diesel knock and smell the french fries...of course I might be biased too because my summer daily driver is an '82 VW rabbit turbo diesel ;)

Thanks guys for all your commentaries, suggestions and links. That's a great forum!

I would like continue with my original transfer and tranny because are rebuilt in mint condition. On the other hand, for adapt other tranny and transfer case I must modify the tranny tunnel, new supports on the frame for them, maybe cut the firewall or displace all forward to not have to cut, new driveshafts, etc's.... too much work and $$ and I have not enough time.

If i would do this work is more easy and cheaper buy a samu 1.9 turbodiesel (that has been sold from factory over here with a Peugeot engine) and adapt the whole mechanics on the Willys.

The motive of swapping my Perkins Diesel is that this engine is obsolete and isn't very powerful and I can't run bigger tires. I hope that with the VW 1.9 TD I can run easily 33" (I have 4.88s)

    I have that at garage.
Can you help me to identify this tranny and bellhousing?
It has 3 speeds in the order like the T90. It's a tranny built by Viasa under licence. I believe that is a T-90. For what engine is this bellhousing? I also would like to know if the input shaft is the same as T-90.
If this stuff is the same as the original I will contact with the overland diesel guys for the VW engine adapt plate and all the swapping will be more easy and fast.

Looks to be original. The starter is in the correct palce on top. Probably an Fhead or Lhead bellhousing. Somebody will chime in with a exact answer.
