    I have a 73 Commando 304cid, t400 auto,
I've been working on changing from the points to electronic ignition for sometime now and it's been fighting me every step of the way. I think I might be on the winning side now with the last thing I need to make sure is hooked up right is the voltage regulator.
The PO obviously changed out the Voltage Regulator at some point and for some unknown reason cut the male/female connector out and hard wired using crimp style butt connectors so I have no way of knowing if the wires coming out of the voltage regulator are hooked to the correct wires that come from the Alt. and starter solenoid.
    Now what I need help with is;
I got a replacement male end connector from Pack Rat and the female end is on the voltage regulator. All that fits and wires line up and the two ends plug together nicely but the wires, color wise that are left on the male end don’t match the wire colors that are called out in the wiring stigmatic or what is all ready in place. So there again I don’t have any way to tell if I’m connecting the correct wire from the vehicle to the correct wire from the voltage regulator.
Now I realize that as time goes on things get changed and who’s to say that every rig that rolled off the assembly line matched color for color the wire stigmatic, but the stigmatic from my factory service manual calls for there to be a yellow wire going to the starter solenoid, a gray wire going to the alternator, as well as a black wire and a green with white tracer wire going to the alternator. Now can someone tell me looking at the open end of the connector and using the aliment notch as 12:00 what color wires come out of the male connector using 2:00, 4:00, 8:00 and 10:00 as identifiers?
Or can someone tell me what the voltage regulator (other then regulates voltage) dose? And does it matter what wire connects to what wire?
    Thanks
    Tim C

Hi Chief, my wiring diagram is from a 69, so it may be different than the 73? Anyways, the regulator on both my 68 and 71 only have three wires in a V pattern. The green is the hot from the ignition switch, it goes from the ignition switch to the alternator and then onto the regulator. The black is ground and the brown goes to the alternator terminal. I'm adding pics of my 71, the fender is off as I'm swapping the tub among other things.

    Hope this helps.

I knew there was something I was going to do. Saw your post on the JCCA and forgot all about it.
First picture is the harness from the alternator side.

This is from the regulator side.

Not sure if the wire colors on the regulator are the same as yours. Regulator is marked Motorola so it may be original. I don't run a Motorola alternator any more so can't match the wires but yes, they have to be in the correct position in the plug for the regulator to work with the alternator.

Motorola and Prestolite (typically same alternator) had several internal changes to match different applications and model changes. Not all of these Commando's, Cj's etc are running around with the properly specified units both alt and regulator. Some solid state Motorola regulators cost more ($80 +) than a complete Delco with internal regulator. I will tell you what I do know on colors for the regulator that I think you have.

Yellow goes to "I" terminal on the starter solenoid.
Black goes to ground on the alternator ground bolt.
Green w/tr goes to the field spade on the alternator. (should be the lug that is not connected to the ground shield).
Gray goes to small stud on the Red plate that has the insulator between the red plate and the small locking nut.
This same stud may have another Gray wire going back to the dash alt/chg indicator light.

Your regulator should be of the 8R series. A pic of the back of your alternator would help confirm this. HTH.
