It would never occur to me to clean up those inside the corner welds.. I am looking to have it look good from the moon or something. 5 Feet might as well be under a microscope.

If they were pretty, continuous welds, I’d leave them. I just prefer not to see the little stacked spot welds from welding sheet metal. There’s just no way of making them look nice without cranking the heat up and warping the panels.

.....throw some logging chains in there ???

Interestingly enough, I remember when we talked about this project a decade ago?... and it was going to be a Jeep for your wife for Sunday trips to get ice cream...you assured me zero off road use as it will be a “ street Jeep”... .... having been a co pilot in your father’s “ ice cream Willy’s” while sitting on a milk crate at speed through the woods with no brakes I knew better that this would never be a street princess. Ha ha

As always , looks great msn! Keep up the good work.

You never know when you will need a fully functional roll cage and a good chunk of log chain on a nice Sunday drive for ice cream. One minute you are thinking of butter pecan, next minute you are axle deep and tipping over into a 3 foot deep mud hole while trying to follow a skidder trail with chains on all 4 tires and a death grip on the steering wheel.

See Cary? There was a method to my madness. Those missing corners were there for a purpose. ;)

33 Phillips M6x1.0 screws tapped into the floor, and I didn’t even go up the slope to the firewall yet. I’ll tackle them the next time I have the body off. There is some other floor work that needs done in the area, and that section will need nuts welded in behind the thinner sheet metal. For now, I’m calling the floor done.

It’s truly amazing the selection of floor pans you can buy from JC Whitney:D

.... too bad I never took pics of when you were stick welding that aluminum foil thick fuel tank back in Barto....

    Looks great man !

I spent the morning doing little odds and ends...
I put the seats back in to check clearances and foot room. I was worried the passenger's feet would be cramped, but it’s not bad. Size 11 stompers:

I’ve been curious whether or not I’ll actually have clearance in the engine bay for a turbo; if I ever trip into a killer deal for a 93-95 Volvo 940 turbo donor car, I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t be wasted time and money. They were the best of the best of these engines with forged parts, sodium valves, oil squirters at the piston skirts, and good wiring.

It looks like I’ll have to completely reconfigure the engine bay (power steering reservoir is in the way of the turbo air intake, the air box would need to come out by the grill, etc...), but the turbo itself will clear the cage, and the down pipe will have a straight shot to my existing exhaust routing.

(With the turbo manifold, the turbo unit will sit 1 1/2” closer to the engine and about an inch lower.)

Also, I started making the patch panel for the right fenderwell where I altered it to fit the battery.

I built the trans cover pieces to be square to the floor line on the passenger’s side wall. I knew something was weird with the floor where it meets the transmission opening. Here you can see how far it was out.

To close that gap, I had to drill out the spot welds from the back,

clamp it back together, and weld it up. I’ll purdy it up later.

I then started on the cover for the battery. My original plan was to just weld a piece in, but the ECM is right next to it, and I’m afraid it would make access difficult. Plus it will be nice to access the positive battery cable without having to remove the battery to get to it. So, I’m making a removable piece like the other floor pieces.

It started as a trim ring out of 1/8” like the rest. I made a mock-up piece on the bench to get my angles and sizing correct. The floor slope is 48°, so I cut a piece of wood at that angle, then slid a square piece next to it to mimic the silhouette of the box. I placed the ring over it and measured the top and face.

    Something like that...

Here’s a tip on how to get a wide radius on a welded convex corner: weld the inside, not the outside.

That part is done, but I ran out of screws. I thought a box of 50 would be enough.

    Finished the inner fender too.

From what I’ve read online, I could make this turbo work with this engine with bigger injectors and the turbo MAF sensor, but it’s never really perfect, and the compression is too high, so boost has to be kept minimal.

If I’d source the donor car I want, I’d swap the whole harness too. The whole MAF loom is on the other side of the car, and the wiring is 10x better quality. (The 740’s wiring was garbage.) It’s a lot of work, but totally worth it. When I wire the rest of the Jeep, I’m going to keep all of the body wiring separate from the engine wiring to keep the swap as easy as possible.

The extra 50 hp would be a game changer on our long hills out here. That’s almost a whole extra l-head under the hood!

I started on a part of this that I’ve been dreading.

Back when I welded the floor into the back of this thing, I was still in the mindset of “throw this together for a quick fix.” I was less than careful about warpage. I also just used what I had; a plate of 12 gauge steel that was about 6x heavier than what it needed. So now I have an impenetrable turtle shell for a rear floor that pops like a giant oil can if you stand on it.

I needed to cut an access hole in it for the fuel tank.

I’ll get back to that in a bit, but first I need to go down the looong road of shrinking the floor to get the dome out of it.

Quickly heat a spot with the torch until the spot bows up, hammer it flat, then run a wet rag around the spot in circles until it’s cool. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat... Until I ran out of O2. An hour+ into it and I’m finally seeing some progress.

I’m less concerned with a perfectly flat finish than I am to just get the oil canning out of it. Most of it will be covered by a seat and drawer anyway.

The piece I cut out of the floor will get re-used as the cover, so shrinking the rest of the floor first should make the gaps around the lid tighter.
