Valves?

A little back story first.
Last fall I tore into my L head to do a valve job. Replaced all 8 valves my engine had been overhauled in the 90’s then parked for 25 years before I bought it. Valve seats had been replaced. I am not unfamiliar to valve work my dad and I have many years of doing overhauls on small engines and tractors running a small business.

Here’s my problem, after getting Jeep running again around Labor Day I only put around 100 miles on it and then took body off to replace bent/ rotted frame. I am fixing oil leaks in the process. I unfortunately took head off again to find a head gasket not sealed between number 2 and 3 piston and all exhaust valves were pitted to a point they had to be surfaced in 100 miles of running.

What is everyone using for replacement valves? I bought sealed power valves that I have had great luck for years with. Is it common to have head surfaced when removing? Does anyone recommend solid copper head gasket and Indian head shellac? I did not and will not run OMIX engine components. I’m concerned to put this engine back together with these valves.

The engine ran very well after first valve job. Valve seats are new, and I lapped valves to guarantee surface seal after both faces were prepped.

 

Check the head and block surface before you continue. I had the machine shop check the surface of block and head and I used a Felpro gasket set. You HAVE to follow the gasket makers instructions. There are probably OEM valves available or mil surplus but mine were still good. Many of these blocks were decked, that's why the serial number is missing from so many. Not much space in between cyl so that was probably standard procedure to reduce failure rate. Side note, I have a CJ block and a A1 block with the SN intact which is kinda cool.
