A couple of days ago I was driving my CJ. F134, D18, T98 and out of the blue the valves
started pinging. So I limped it home. I have made no changes since I replaced
the crankshaft gear last Sept/Nov. Have had no issues. I filled up from a BP the
day before I had the new issue. So I thought it was bad gas. I have had that
    happen before in the railbuggy.

So I drained the fuel, and refilled the tank w/ hi test from a SuperAmerica. No
change. I ran a compression test this morning and here are the results:

    #1---- 123
    #2-----124
    #3-----35
    #4-----35

I'm sure there is an issue w/ the valves. But what would cause the difference in
the readings? And why the #3 and #4 cylinders? Timing is correct. And it advances
as it gets gas. Idles a bit rough, but when you kick it you can hear the valves clanking.

I have a friend coming over tomorrow to take a look @ it tomorrow. Took the
valve cover off to take a look and nothing seems out of place.

pinging as in spark knock, detonation ?
clanking as in valves out of adjustment ?
first order of business will be to account for the low compression readings
bolts on rocker stands all tight ?
up/down movement of all seems the same ?
did you have a spark plug come apart and go thru the engine ?

    1) Don't believe it's spark knock. Actual rattle out of the valves.
    2) Sounds like it is. Haven't checked that. And not sure why they would go out of adjustment.
    3) Looking into the low readings. Pulled valve cover off. Going to check it today.
    4) That's kind of what I'm thinking. Going to check that today.
    5) Checking that today.
    6) Plugs were pulled for the compression test. All looked normal.

I'm thinking that bolt came loose. It's odd that the #3 and #4 have low readings.
I would think it would be one or the other. Having several valves or settings go
bad @ the same time doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Thanks Jim. I'll let you know what I find out.

You might have blown the head gasket between #3 & #4, and what you are hearing is the compresson passing back and forth between them.

Rotate engine until #3 valves have closed and then inject air into #3 with plug removed from #4. If you get air outa #4 then you have a blown head gasket.

I believe that's the next step. To much of a coincidence the #3, #4 have the
same low compression. Either blown head gasket or cracked head. Starting
    on it all next week.

    Thanks for the tips!
