anybody have a picture of the stock V6 exhaust and how its routed?

I ordered a complete exhaust system for my CJ5 and i believe it places the muffler in the wrong place and a bit low...

Is the muffler just ahead of the rear axle? The '71 stock system runs above the skid plate, but below the cross member.
From where did you order the system? Are you sure it's for a V6 and not the I4?
My local muffler shop said they can restore my V6 exhaust system, but it all has to be custom built because none of the V6 exhaust parts are commercially available.

The stock system on my '67 ran above the skid plate, and the muffler was cross ways behind the rear axle.

    yes..

    soup to nuts..

Im actually really surprised nobody knows about it..

    http://www.waldronexhaust.com/

    Jeep V6 66-71
    also comando..

Here are some pics with the problem.. looks like the bend is not at enough of a right angle..
a right angle would place the muffler at the right place..

Wow - I hadn't heard of that place. Does the Y pipe converge just like the picture shows? Their system won't work with a 70 1/2 - 71 CJ5 as pictured; their muffler location interferes with the fuel tank. I can exhale now - whew!

Now on to your question - it does appear that a sharper bend is needed if the muffler is to sit just aft of the axle. If you feel you have the rest of the system properly placed, it's time to call Waldron.

That first diagram would strongly indicate your pipe is properly bent. (Thanks WYOMIKE!) Maybe you can fit the muffler on there and try to finesse everything to fit per the diagram.

I'm keeping that second diagram so my muffler shop has a good idea of how to properly route my new pipe (Thanks again, WYOMIKE!)

    after seeing that...
I think I might be able to rotate the "ball and socket" joint a bit in the 2 part flange connection to get the correct angle..

Damn... these guys are good.. must have a huge database of old CAD drawings..

Here's a reply I received from Waldron after inquiring about the mid 70-71 model exhaust (I sent them the pic provided by WYOMIKE):
    David,

We can definitely make the Y pipe.
We have found the data for the tailpipe; it can be made in either 1 ¾” or 2” diameter.
Our specifications indicate the muffler has oval body (approximately 5”H X 10”W X 18”L).
You can place your order by calling the toll-free number below or you can order on our website; you will be asked to describe all the vehicle details after you click the “Buy Now” button.

Restoreing my 69 CJ 5 going to run the mufflers thru the rear fender wells like H1 Hummer, Plenty of room, going to use the flexible 3inch exhaust tubing used for semi truck exhaust. Still in prototype stages on old cj tub. Once I get this perfected will show pics!!

Dang! there not too far away from me. couple hours anyways...

I'm going to have to check them out and see what they want for a new ypipe. The driveshaft goes thru the Y pipe I have on there now since I put the lift on the jeep.

Not to hijack, but did they make the Y Pipe to fit two rear dump manifolds like the picture indicates? I am wondering if this is a logical option for me. I just need the y pipe to fit with my new rear dump manifolds as my exhaust from the Y Pipe connection back is all set from my last build.

This is copied from the 53-71 edition of the Service Manual

My Oct' 69 Jeep originally had the early setup and IMO it looked rigged. That pipe hanging below the skid plate not only looked bad, but could have been a drag issue. I think that's why they changed it later on.

Problem with the later setup is that it will not work if you have a forward PTO winch as I do. there is just not enough room for the pipe and driveline.....so that leaves you kind of limited. I originally had a shop make up a military jeep style setup with the muffler under the passenger seat like this--->

That worked OK for a while untill I had several problems with it.
    1. I didn't like that you could see so much of the exhaust pipe under the passenger side
    2. The muffler the shop put on wasn't race car loud, but I got tired of listening to it because it dumped right next to me under the door.
    3. I scored an original set of diamond tred steps and I couldn't put them on as the muffler et al was in the way.

I then took it to another shop and told the guy I wanted it piped out the back toward one side or the other (gas circulation reasons); I wanted a quieter muffler, and I wanted to see as little of the piping as possible. I suggested it go above the crossmember on the passenger side and he made it happen. It's like a whole new jeep. There are a few additional welding spots where he canibalized the first system from just below the manifolds, but it looks great. Where he put the muffler, it even looks like a new jeep because the muffler is in the same spot. Even with the draw bar supports, it fits. Nothing is rubbing. The muffler he got was a little fatter and little longer, but it is half as quiet as before

I just wanted to vote for the Waldron exhaust. I bought the aluminized stock system for my V6 and it is a beautiful thing. The installer didn't have any trouble, and it looks and sounds awesome. To me it's totally worth it compared to leaving it up to a fabricator's discretion, unless you want something really different. My Jeep had a very nice custom dual exhaust setup with glass packs, but it was rusting through. It was probably superior in terms of ground clearance and breathing, but I love this new system.

Which muffler did you get? They have OEM, mild imposter & performance imposter.
If you could post some pics of your new system, that would be great. I'm considering this system again after reading your comments.
