Rebuilding my dana 44 from a 66 v6 with 11" brake upgrade. When disassembled it had the outer axle seal, not the seal that seats on the hub. Seal was shot no way of determining its orientation. When assembled as you would with the hub seal, the lip of this seal rides on the groove for the key-way on the axle shaft. I turned it around so it faces the other way (the neoprene toward the inside), but I have not found anything to verify this after an exhaustive search. Any parts diagram, or information would be greatly appreciated.

I looked through my FSM. I don't see anything that will help you.

Is the axle somehow too far in?

I do not believe the axle is to far in. I have shimmed both sides with 4 thou on drivers, and 6 thou on passenger. Everything on the web shows the seal for the hub, not the axle. As in the top picture above I have turned the seal toward the inside. This seems to work. After looking at Focker's diagram it appears like I'm missing a seal behind the bearing too. Maybe I'll try Walck's tomorrow.

    ?

Do you have a locker of some sort? With a stock differential the tapered axle shafts are floating left to right, that should be 4 thou total pushing them both from one side to another.

Yes, there is an axle seal that is definitely needed.

With the 11" brake upgrade is there a difference in the thickness of the backing plates?

Also, do you have the hub seal? That is what you need, I don't believe you need the one you have. Isn't the only difference in the 11" conversion the backing plate and brake parts?

Inner axle seal goes in the tube and seals on axle shaft.
Outer seal goes an the outside of the backing plate and seals on the wheel hub.
It is covered by the grease protector.
Correct p/n for outer seal/retainer for CJ is 914802.

I do have a locker, and the only way to get both axles inspec was to shim both sides. I read in a few places that this seal was used in 66 and newer dana 44 rear which this axle is a 66, and it is the same seal that was removed. I believe that I have it oriented the right way. If it is turned around the hub would ride on it. I need to check with my axle guy to see about inner seals.. He rebuilt the factory posi with new clutches, and the axles were already installed when I got it back. I suppose you could use an outer axle seal and a hub seal. I'm going to call Walck's tomorrow as well. The more I learn the more I find out what I don't know.
