Does anyone know where to find headers for a 1970 CJ5 with the 225 V-6? Will settle for manifolds if I can't find headers.

Thanks for all of the replies. I've googled this every which way I can and have hit dead ends. I googled the part #69420 that OzFin posted and may have finally found some at Summitt. The description says they will fit a 231. That is the same head as a 225, is that right? They look like the ones I have, but just want to be sure before I order. Thanks again for all of the replies.

Some one correct me if I'm not remembering this right but I think those should work. There was a change to 231 heads but I believe it was on the intake side not exhaust.I have some manifolds off a 1968 and some 1981 heads off a 231 so if you want I will dig them up and take a look

Summit's price went through the roof. I recall paying $125 about 3 years ago.

All but the Novak headers are fenderwell headers and require trimming of the fenderwell. The Novaks are in frame and very shiny.

The AA headers I have required only trimming a support from the drivers side of the tub. No trimming or cutting otherwise fwiw

is this a street jeep or will it see rock use ,,, I had Headmans and their design sucked you would go over the rock with the front tire and land right on the tubes/crushing them ,,,,,,not a smart layout . I came across a set of Hooker super comps and those exit close to the frame and have not been hit/dented yet and I abuse my rig ... but Hooker does not make them anymore :(

I've had several sets of headers, all of which eventually cracked. The Hooker brand seemed to last longest but they broke too. The hedmans would only last a year or two. The headers are routed outside the frame and put the muffler or glass pack right in front of the rear tire, a very short run from the engine. That short run in combo with Dauntless rocking back and forth is hard on the joint of the header pipe to the mounting flange at the engine. Even if the exhaust is just hanging from the headers they will break. If you try to hang the exhaust it will restrain the engine and this will also cause a cracked pipe. Some people have run their tail pipes from the outside-frame-muffler back in between the frame and the tub next to the rear tires, I don't know how that has worked for them but when I was considering it I thought would b-b-b-bounce against the jeep.

Good quality headers will have a good weld bead around the pipe to flange connection. Cheap headers will have spot welds on the inside of the pipe to the flange-very weak, not made to hold weight. Hooker used to hand weld all of their stuff, I don't know if they still do. Hooker was high quality. If you do get cheaper brand you can reinforce the welds if you are skilled with Tig or Oxy-acetylene welding and don't care about the header warranty.

These days the Novak headers would be my choice simply because the exhaust is inside the frame, but I would make sure they clear the steering box. Those weren't available when I was running headers, so I have not tried them. The Novak people know the jeeps better than anyone, so I am sure they are fine.

As far as hitting the fenders, you don't have to cut the fender well. You can use a ball peen hammer and a little skill and patience and a little torch heat to push an area of the fender out. It won't look beautiful but will help keep mud and snow and sand and salt out of your engine compartment. I can post a pic of mine later if you are interested in seeing it. I have since switched back manifold exhaust but fender mod is still there.

One more thing, running headers means lower exhaust pressure which equals hotter exhaust temp which will tend to burn out weak exhaust valves so be prepared for some loud bangs when decelerating.

The Novak ones are made by Saunders under contract with Novak. I was impressed with the quality even from the Beta ones while I was working on them with Eric.

I have not run the AA inside the rail (didn't know they had any for the 225), but I have a set of the outside the rail. I use them with Super Traps to keep the weight down and they have lasted more than 7 years now with no issues at all.
