The jeeps are the same as the export models, except that they were also special ordered for some of the mines in the U.P.. I asked some guys who worked at the mines and they said that the mines required them to be diesels so that if they were run underground, the emissions output wouldn't be as bad as a gasoline engine, and the fact that diesel is safer from a combustables standpoint with it's higher flashpoint rating. Also, most of the trucks in the mine run on diesel so it is the fuel of choice for convenience.

 

I have a CJ2A with an Isuzu C190 diesel engine and the Isuzu 4-speed transmission & t/case. It has 4.88 (Overland wagon) axles and I get 100-110km/h (50-68mph) on the road with it (top speed, depending on the wind). It is an absolute pleasure to drive and very light on fuel. It is a little hard to start in winter- glow plugs must be good. I think the C240 is basically the same engine (well they look almost the same). It is very interesting to hear that some CJ5's came out with Isuzu engines. Isuzu engines are very popular here (South Africa), but very expensive to work on. Just my 0.2c.

Hi guy's realise this thread is a bit dated,
but i've some info to add, the sd22 diesels I'm pretty sure have the same engine block bolt pattern as the sd33's, and sd33's were fitted OEM to our CJ10's here in OZ, so tho rare you can get a bellhousing that will go between an sd33/22 and a T176, which also happens to be the same ford tranny bolt pattern as the NP435 granny tranny, cupla otions

also there are a few isuzu c240 cj7's in oz, I have a c240 that i'm considering putting in my cj6.

There was also a Ford Ranger diesel (the older Ranger, the little one with square DOT headlights). I assume that it might have been a Mazda engine. Have seen a few around my neck of the woods.

With the common availability of conversion parts for the 350 gas motor, the 6.2/6.5 would be the easiest CJ swap for a novice (read: guy without a welder and limited fabrication skills). It would litteraly be a bolt-in, and it would fit.

I'm not saying that it's the best swap for all people (people have different needs for what they want in a finished product), but it would be pretty simple. Really, the only thing that would require any thought would be beefing up the front end and a good enough radiator to cool it.

I can help out on subjects dealing with CJ's and/or the 6.2/6.5 (since I have experience in those areas). And I am anxious to learn about some of the other diesels you guys want to stuff in your Jeeps.

thought about an olds 5.7L swap before I rebuilt the motor. looked like only mod would be using olds style motor mounts.

 

There's an MSN group dedicated to the Datsun/Nissan 720 pickups, and they have a board specifically for the SD22 engines (I know about it because I drive a 720 with a Z24). If you need info on the engine, you might find that board a good resource.

Just wanted to let ya know, I have the sd33 engine, trans and transfer out of a 75 IH scout in my 52 willys trk and I love it. Not rooster tail thrower but it will pull anything I hook to without bauking.

 

That SD33 is an excellent motor. I'm still searching for a suitable engine to swap. I've bought two SD22's and looked at several 22's and 25's. All needed major work or were beyond salvage. Parts are scarce for these as well. Even the Nissan dealership parts guys look at you like you're crazy when you ask for diesel parts. Right now I'm looking for a source for a TD27 from a D21 series Nissan truck/pathfinder. There's millions of them running around overseas.

 

I'm trying to make a deal for an antique tractor, flat head 4 jeep engine used as an air compressor pump, and a factory Mitsubishi diesel hooked to a T90 and D18 from a Japanese CJ3B.

 

Wild thought...Could an Fhead handle a diesel conversion?? I thought I heard about converting gas engines to diesel, soo the F head is a strong motor........

 

My buddy has a factory diesel in his Gladiator. I think it's a Renault diesel.

 

uh, no. well not esay. diesels have way more compression the gasoline engines. thats how they work. when conversion take place gas to diesel the engine is swapped. thou you can go from diesel to gas by changing alot...heads, intake, yahda, yahda, yahda. moreover, cooling would be a major problem in a flatty. typical combustion camber temp is around 25k degrees in a diesel versus 16k degrees in a gas engine, iirc.

hope the nicesan works out thou, heck a cummins 4b might work.
