    SSCCCOOOORRRRRRREEE!!!!

I returned Dan's crack pipe and started asking around for a Z motor. Saturday a guy I used to farm with led me to 4 rusted out Datsun/Nissan trucks in a field behind his house. One has a SD22 diesel in it. I towed it home this morning. Will go after the others as needed/desired.

For now I plan to get the diesel one running and drive it around a little. If it's totally gutless I'll pass. But, if it runs good and has sufficient pick-up I will put it in the 3B. <daydreaming> Ahhh.... biodiesel, cheap fuel, 30mpg </daydreaming>

...what? where? ..... Where was I? Oh yeah, if the diesel sucks I can pick from the 2 z22's and the z24 in the other trucks. SLOW progress awaits :p

I bet it'll be slow, but they did put some of those motors into IH scouts so you never know.

Would be cool if you could drop a turbo onto it.

There is a guy around here that runs his scout on BD.

    Good luck!

If you decide to part with that diesel....let me know. That would be an awsome swap IMHO.

Well of course I'm going to give my seal of approval!

BTW that was the SD33 that the used in the Scout, not the SD22.

There was an article in JP mag when it first came out with a guy with a flattie that put I think an Isuzu diesel in it. Seemed to work good. I'll have to check my mags and see if I can get which issue it was. Nickmil.

I miss the early JP publications. Jeep Cherokees had a diesel option about '85. '79 ,'80 Scout did have a turbo diesel. Great rigs but not noted for performance.

That's a real concern. It will have to be capable of pushing the 3B 65-70 (the whole reason for a swap to begin with) without abusing it. The vehicle weights are nearly identical, the 3B has plenty of gearing, but the wind drag on the jeep will be twice as bad. It will have to move that Datsun truck along very well for me to use it. That's if I can get it running.... hasn't been run/driven in at least 6-7 years.

I'll try to update as often as possible.

OK, deal if I find another one.... I can still borrow the pipe occassionally until then, right???

Could be. Couldn't find the issue last night but will continue looking. Need better organization than stacks of mags!:) There were two of them, one gas and one diesel with a mixed bag of parts. They were trying to see how inexpensive they could build them up with junkyard parts and stuff they had laying around. Will keep looking. Nickmil.

On a side note...I had the chance to work with the Japanese army a few years ago. Guess what they were driving. Diesel 3B's. Stock. They had a couple of other neat features as well. One I liked was a stock bellows enclosure seal for the front knuckles. I've been dreaming about how to import those things ever since.

Just wanted to chime in about the old JP issue. I had it out a little while back. It was the April/May 1998 issue. The Jeep had a 2.2L (i would guess thats the SD22). He claimed 30 plus mpg's, and at the time a turbo was in the works. I have a 4BD1 (3.9L Isuzu industrial) in my CJ-5 and it work pretty nice. Once I do a set of gears in it I'm sure it will do good on the highway. Haven't done enough driving to get a feel for the mileage (plus my speedo cable is busted). Just my 2.

Hi guys, I debated swapping diesels in a couple of my jeeps for years, but ended up going with propane injection on my crawler instead. My brother did swap a turbo cummins from a '91 power wagon in his M715 though and that turned out awesome.

Anyway, Isuzu diesels were used in the late 70's and early 80s as a factory option for the CJ5s and CJ7s. My uncle worked at an iron ore mine in Upper Michigan where he had gotten me the service books and some engines out of these rare isuzu diesel powered jeeps. I did sell the engines with some of the adapters, but I still have some of the adapter bellhousings and flywheels and clutch set ups from 1 or two of these engines in my shed. The guy who bought the last ones says they are identicle to a series of modern 4 cyl. isuzu engines used in many cab-forward over-the-road trucks nowadays. The bellhousings accept the jeep t176 transmissions or the factory t-18 transmissions. If anyone is interested in this stuff drop me an email, I'd like to sell it since I don't need another project waiting around for me!
    Thanks,
    Daniel Pawlak

Those were Isuzu C240s that were used in the late '70s/early '80s CJs, but I though they were export-only units? :?

Daniel I might be interested in one of those bellhousing/adapter/clutch ***'y packages. That is if I can find a C240 on these shores that is not an industrial engine and they do NOT want a kings ransom for it! Shoot me a PM on the particulars please.

    Thanks,
    Don

PS-is your bros M715 the one with the body lift and the 22.5" truck tires on it that I saw on another board?

Just an interesting historical note, Dutch (my old CJ5, which was originally a diesel) was always said to be part of a batch of diesel Jeeps made for the mines in the UP. Why it was sold locally before getting there I was never able to find out.
