I had the pleasure of meeting Lawrence Elliott this morning, who sold me one of his modified steering bellcranks (Steering Bellcrank Mod with Paired Tapered Roller Bearings).

While we were talking, Lawrence pulled out an interesting old used bellcrank. He said someone had given it to him years ago when they bought one of his modified bellcranks.

This bellcrank has an integral threaded boss and a screw-on cap. From the remaining paint, it appears to be military, but may or may not actually be. Lawrence was a jeep mechanic at a dealership during the 60's up through the 80's, but said this is the only one of this type of bellcrank he has come across.

    Any idea of its origin?:

Interesting now let the great google search begin since I'm at work and all my military manuals are at home.

I just came across the photo and post below in the G503 site's M38A1 Tech forum, under http://forums.g503.com/viewtopic.php?t=80292#p463590:

"I came across my M38/M38A1 Cdn parts manual, and it refers to replacing (when stock exhausted) the early bellcrank assembly (NSN 2530-00-737-5183/Willys pn 800867) with a later bellcrank (NSN 2530-00-333-3527 Willys pn 906296). Along with the bellcrank, you also had to order a bunch of other small parts including the cap 2530-00-333-3526 (willys pn 808436), the shoulder bolt 5306-21-107-1495 (pn 906396) and bearing, sleeve 3120-21-106-0245 (willys pn 906397) along with some washers and seals.

Since the 21 in the NSN indicates a Canadian stock number, it may be that the US did not use these particular parts. Normally when a part is used by both countries, Canada would use the US Nato stock number.
I could check the old Canadian NSN microfiches to see if these numbers did eventually change up to American, but with the manufacturers part numbers I have given, hopefully a supplier can decipher what you would need."

I kinda like the idea it lowers the bell crank so the pto shaft will go over the top of the bell crank arm.

That photo came from ECVJeeps which = Pat Newman, he lives about 20 minutes from me when he's in town. I know he's complained a lot about OMIX bellcrank rebuild kits, I did tell him about Lawrences's bearing mod a few years ago. next time I'm talking to him I'll ask about those things.

I think the bellcrank's lower stance is due to the frame bracket having considerably more drop. Is the photo of an M38 with the round crossmember and the bracket behind the crossmember?
That doesn't look like any of my old M38a-1s.
