It broke right at the spring plate. The axle didn't come totally free, just loose enough to slide along the springs and change the direction it was pointing at random times. Most Ubolt breakage I have seen have been at the point where it shears with the spring plate. U bolt skid plates help some with this as it keeps the impacts down at the critical point of the nut and bolt.

Once I did see one pop at the upper end of the U - I believe that one was due to hard twisting of the drive train.

    Two things.
    1) I re-use decent u-bolts. They can be re-torqued. Think about it. You have to re-torque them after you drive them for a while anyway. You can't just keep putting new ones on!
    2) When mounting an L-head on an engine stand, space it out far enough so that you can rotate the crankshaft with the bolts still in it.

You should always use new U-bolts. It's what the manufacturer recommends.

If you need part numbers do a search on "Dorman" and U-bolt. You'll find the appropriate part numbers for a CJ-5 and these should be the same for a flatty. I got mine from the local Carquest.

Finally, watch your post content. I edited your last post because it's not consistent with the forum rules and agreement.

Like my post had said, got new ones, I'll be going with those go with that, I even talked to the man and he told be what torque, so I'm set. No need to go to that and order new ones...Again... Since I got mine...Today.

Typically you just install long enough bolts that will reach through the holes on your stand and through the holes on your engine that the bellhousing bolts to. The bolts do not have to fit perfect. On my stand, I need spacers inbetween so I can rotate the crankshaft if it has bolts in it.
