Debating a twin stick conversion for my dana 18, for no other reason, than lack of stuff to add to my jeep. As a "logging trail" being the most severe off roading i will ever do, is it a worthwhile adition to my jeep?

I never liked the single stick. Twin stick allows you to have 2 wheel low.

Plus it looks cooler and it's much easier to get to the shifters. I always hated the single stick placement way up under the dash.

Add me to the list of not liking the single stick....it's a little harder yet to reach it in a J-truck.

I never had a twin stick in my Jeep, but thought it would not go in to low unless you put it in four wheel first? Tux had a single stick from the factory in 64, I always thought it was because of the bench seat, three people can ride in the front seat.

that is correct . but when you reassemble you leave inter lock pill out . then you have 2WD low

I would like to have a twin stick - but have never had one. That being said - I've never felt like it was really needed but would be nice to have - if just for the 'cool' factor. OD would be my priority over twin stick D18. I could also see someone needing to make a tight turn (especially with manual steering) might like having 2wd low, to make the turn easier but keep the low range in place.

I only used 2wd low for going down steep hills for the gear reduction.

The biggest thing about twin stick, is ease of use.

Keep in mind, you can only eliminate the "pill" in the twin-stick version to get 2wd low range. If you leave the pill out on the single stick, it won't shift through all four positions. If I remember, you can't get in low range.
I have had many Jeeps with both single and twin sticks. I much prefer the single stick version when it is adjusted correctly. It is very distinct and precise going into each position, and is up an out of the way, but still easy to reach over to shift.

I have automatic front hubs on my Jeep, in low range they hook up going up hill, and disconnect going down hill.

If you manually lock in your lock o matics, they will stay engaged going down hill. Otherwise in "free", lock o matics only engage when the axle shaft has power going to the hub. No load (like down hill), they disengage.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.
I've owned both and much prefer the twin stick. I hate the position of the single stick and it's harder to shift. The twin stick you just give a little bit of a tug to get in 4WD. Plus having the two low option is a huge plus for me. Plenty of times I want the lower gear but don't want it in 4WD.

I had Lock-O-Matic's on my Jeep a long time a go. My first time flat towing on a vacation they locked up and spit out the front driveshaft at 60 M.P.H. I never used them again. I am not sure if they had an internal failure or they just decided to engage at speed when being towed.

Dang, sorry about that happening. That is interesting however. I'm scratching my head trying to picture how that could happen. Flat towing wouldn't be any different than driving along in 2WD.

What flavor of Spicer18 is in the Jeep? I think my spare is twin stick.
