twin stick w/ overdrive linkage pic needed

    Hi all -

    I finally got around to installing the twinsticks I picked up from Nickmil (what a year and a half ago?) and need to come up with a solution for the OD shifter and linkage.

    The original OD linkage is straight, and came up to a bracket I had to make that attached to the lower right corner of the SM420. This will no longer work as the twin sticks are now in the way.

    I'll likely make the parts I need - but a pic or two from others who have alerady gone through this would be helpful for ideas.

    Chris - I think you did this didn't you?

    Adam - I still haven't gotten around to the V6 rebuild, but will eventually. My XJ got a stroker motor this summer after I burnt a valve and cracked a piston (there went the rebuild funds).

    I just heated the twin stick shift levers with a torch and bent them forward (straightened them) and to the right to clear the od. lever but I'm using a D18 with my SM420.

    I don't have an SM420 but I had to modify the stock OD shift bracket so it fit the right rear corner of my T-14. I then heated and bent the In-Out lever to the right so it would clear the OD stick. The linkage between the OD shifter and the OD body was cut down and bent into a slight S shape to clear everything. I had some pics but they were lost :(

    Here's what I did for mine. I would recommend using heavier or stronger bar stock than I did. It is a little flexy but does work. The diameter of my bar is 5/16" and as you can see I doubled it up on the turns to add some strength. I probably would have used tubing if I did it all over again. Oh and my tranny is a 465, so I'm not sure of the differences between that and the 420. I had to keep the linkage pretty low profile to keep from hitting the tub.

    Thanks for all the replies everyone. The 465 setup, or variation thereof, looks like it'll work just fine for the 420 as well. Thanks for posting those pics!

    yeah, I miss this place and can't get over here as often as I would like to. Looks like the board has grown, is extremely healthy and still offers quick, competent advice to those who seek it.
