I'm moving my build from the introduction page to here. I kind of figured this is the place to be to continue my documentation of my work. The link to my introduction is here http://earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/new-cj5-owner.126233/

As I've already stated, this was a farm vehicle of my Dad's, (however, he was the the third owner). Some of the few memories I remember of my early childhood were in this Jeep. I remember going up and down ditch banks, fields, and all over with him happily riding in the passenger seat. He raked hay with it, used it as a service vehicle, and even used it to heard cattle where other vehicles couldn't travel. To me, this Jeep means a lot.

So hear I am, over 20 years later since the last time this Jeep has ran rebuilding it. I don't plan on doing a historical restoration or make it a rock crawler, but I plan on building it up as a strong, sturdy, and reliable vehicle that a farmer would have been proud of. I want this vehicle to be a testament to the farmers who used it. Of course, I'll be adding a few things to it that I would like to see.

Today, with the help of my father, I pulled out the engine. I swear, he was so giddy to work on it (a smile I've not seen on him in years). As we went through it, everything looked to be in pretty decent shape. The worst was the one piston that was seized. After some cleaning, I have high hopes for the engine rebuild.

I'll be posting pictures in the next day or so asking everybody's opinion is, and what mods were made during it's life.

Welcome from a frequent visitor to your area. My in-laws owned the place south of Newell on 139 across from the wrecking yard. (Got some Jeep parts there when they were more friendly).

I know that wrecking yard! I was thinking about going there for a new front passenger fender, but they keep odd hours.

Walt, I have not seen an elk in the area in a long time.. But I've heard that the Cal pine area in Modoc county has some good ones.

Anyways, so I took out the engine over my set of days off. Got everything stripped down and ready for the machinist. I'm hoping to be able to take it in the next week or two.
The seized piston wasn't horrible to take out. I let some ATF set in it for a few days prior. After some tender nudging it popped right out. It's sad really that the cylinder wall was damaged. The rest of the pistons and cylinder walls showed little wear. The timing chain was tight, leading me to believe that the engine had very low miles on it.
Hopefully I'll be able to borrow some calipers soon from a buddy of mine to gauge everything.
    Anyways, here's a couple of pictures of what I had. IMG_20170801_185100499-780x1040.jpg IMG_20170801_185052628-780x1040.jpg

$60 bucks or so to have 1 cyl. sleeved, around here anyway. If 1 is all that's needed?

3b, that's what I'm hoping for. I'm going to try to clean up the cylinders a bit and then check for tolerances. If everything looks good, I'll just have the one cylinder re-sleeved. Of course, I'll also ask the machinist his opinion. I spoke with him on the phone the other day, and it made me a little worried that he wouldn't give me a clear price over the phone. He did say, however, that a bore job for a six cylinder was $300!!! That just seems high to me, but he's been recommended by several people I know... So what do you do right?
